How to easily replace Bose QC35 ear pads (fits other Bose headphones)

In addition, changing the Bose QC35 ear pads can seem like a delicate process, and you don’t want to damage your headphones or new ear pads during replacement.

Why do I change Bose QC35 ear pads

This is the second time I change Bose QC35 ear pads. I first changed it about 2 years after I bought the headphones. The faux leather ear pads started to stink (probably from sweat), and no matter what I did, I couldn’t get rid of the smell.

So I bought new ear pads, replaced them, and happily went my own way.

The newly replaced ear pads have come apart at the seams. This is likely due to the fact that I left the headphones outdoors while the high humidity environment affected the ear pads.

I thought this was a good opportunity to document the process, and I hope it helps anyone new to Bose.

What Tools You Need

As mentioned in our Complete Guide to Changing Headphone Earpads, you will need a few tools before you start this little operation.

However, the Bose QC35 doesn’t need much. This is because the headphones use a “clip system” to attach the earpads to the earcups.

All you really need is your fingernail. However, if you constantly cut your nails short, you may need a tool called a spatula.

When you get to the last few clips (usually the last one), you will have difficulty pushing the groove of the earcups into the clip. That’s when the spatula comes in handy.

However, the replacement can still be done with just a fingernail (even if it is short).

How to replace the Bose QC35 ear pads

1. First, choose a starting point on one of the ear pads. Apply some pressure or squeeze to slightly deform the pads and pull them out. Part of the ear cushion should pop out.

   Since the ear pads are attached to the clips, you need to slowly but deliberately peel off the ear pads.

   Find the starting point. I started at the top of the ear cushion.

   Remove the ear pads from the clips.

2. Continue on all other sides until the ear cushion is completely removed.

3. Repeat on the other ear cushion.

   Both ear pads removed

4. Now take one of the replacement ear pads and locate the groove in the ear pads.
   There is a thick cardboard material on the back of the ear cushion. It has a groove in which the clips will sit.

5. Insert the groove into the first clamp.

   The first few clips are pretty light. Just slide/press the groove under the clips.

6. Clockwise (or counterclockwise) press the groove down until it passes the clip and you hear a “click” sound. The groove is now attached to the clip.

7. Once you get to the last few clips, you may find it difficult to navigate through the groove of the clips.
8. If you have a spudger, use it to push it past the remaining clips. If you don’t have a spatula, don’t be afraid. Try letting go of a couple of cut grooves and repeat step 6. This usually works for me after a few adjustments.

   A new set of ear cushions has been installed! Like New! Almost..

Step 8 is the most “complex”. Be careful with the force you use or you may rip the ear pads. Remember: if the clip doesn’t move, just “click” a few times and do it again.

Should I buy third-party Bose ear pads?

As mentioned above, I bought the headphones from third party service providers, not Bose. The main reason is the price. They have served me well and seem to be able to last for a reasonable amount of time.

However, if you are a dedicated Bose fan, feel free to shop at their store. official store.

Otherwise, you can get great-reviewed replacement Bose ear pads for half the original price. Amazon.

There are many imitation Bose ear pads on Amazon, be sure to pick one with great reviews. Tip: look not at the good reviews, but at their bad ones. Pick the one with the fewest bad reviews.
