Piston ring vibration

Piston ring vibration causes power loss and high oil consumption. But what is piston ring vibration? What are the types of piston ring vibration? What are the causes of axial and radial vibrations of the piston ring? Here you will find a lot of useful information.

Vibration of the piston ring can occur especially on gasoline engines at medium load and high engine speeds. Vibration is understood as the separation of the ring from the lower contact surface, and the loss of the sealing function of the ring due to the lack of its radial fit to the cylinder wall (decrease in ring pressure). Both lead to a decrease in power and high oil consumption, since the sealing function of the ring is impaired or ceases to be performed at all.

AXIAL VIBRATION OF THE PISTON RING

The axial vibration of the piston ring usually starts at the butt ends and is transmitted from them to the rest of the ring. Due to their open position, butt ends tend to separate from the lower support surface, especially under adverse operating conditions. From the vibrating butt ends, the vibration is transmitted as a wave to the rest of the piston ring.

ATTENTION!

Due to lower inertial forces, flatter rings are less likely to vibrate. Increased clamping pressure acting on the butt ends prevents vibration.

Causes of axial vibration of the piston ring

• Ring clearance too large in height
• Reduced ring elasticity (wear) and consequently reduced clamping force in the area of ​​the butt ends, especially for piston rings with pear-shaped radial pressure distribution
• Mechanical contact of the piston with the cylinder head due to errors made during repair, especially on diesel engines (Fig. 1)
• Knocking combustion caused by incorrect operation of the engine management system (carburization, ignition) and / or low fuel quality (too low octane number, diesel fuel impurities)

• Excessive wear of the piston ring running surface in the form of excessive convexity due to excessive ring height clearance
• Damage to the ring edges as a result of poor honing (formation of a metal shell): the edges of the ring crumble (especially for simple cast rings without a surface coating), gases enter the gap and separate the ring from the cylinder sliding surface.
