Top 10 worthy horror films of the 21st century that you might not know about – Dimitri Feo on DTF

views

Like many, I like to pass the evening watching a good movie or series. Like many, I noticed a trend that, contrary to logic, the more filmmakers shoot, the less production comes out that is really interesting to watch. This is especially true in the horror genre. If you try to find the top scariest movies, then most likely you will come across two scenarios. First option: you will get a selection that includes “Psycho”, “The Shining”, “Alien” and “Rosemary’s Baby”. Option two: you will come across a slightly more recent squeeze with references to “The Conjuring”, “Sinister” and something like “Reincarnation”. And what about those who have already seen all this a hundred times? Are really good horror films such a rarity? Of course not. It’s just that some of them, for one reason or another, passed by the mass audience. Some of the films below fell victim to the lack of a proper marketing plan or an unfortunate premiere neighborhood, which did not prevent them from gaining their audience later on, being broadcast on TV, appearing in streaming service catalogs, or even being sold on DVD. It is from these pictures that my today’s selection consists.

10. Dark skies (2013)

CP Rating: 6.1

After the unexpected success of “Astral”, producer Jason Blum decided to repeat the same trick – to release another low-budget clone of Hooper’s “Poltergeist”, only for a change to change the lore to “The X-Files”. That’s how Dark Skies came about, a film about a family living in the suburbs, whose homes start to happen very strange things – and all this to the soundtrack of Joseph Bishara (franchise “Astral” and “The Conjuring”). Of the actors, one can also note the cult J.K. Simmons and the good Josh Hamilton and Cary Russell. The director of the films “Legion” and “Shepherd” acted as the author of the script and director of the picture.

9. Ghosts (2007)

CP Rating: 6.1

Several students (played by Emily Blunt and Ashton Holmes) go home during the winter break. In order to get there faster, the heroes decide to shorten the route, turning onto an abandoned road … As for me, the production product from the guys who gave Ocean’s friends (Cluny-Soderberg-Jacobs) for adventure turned out to be quite good. And other participants in the filming process should be praised – Joe Gangeli (“Resident of the Damned”) and Stephen Katz (“Shadow of the Vampire”) for the script, and Dan Loustsen (“Silent Hill”, “Nightmare Alley”) for the camera work.

8. Grave Defilers (2006)

CP Rating: 5.0

Enlisting the support of the previously mentioned Bishara, as well as the cinematographer of the Saw franchise, editor Mike Mendes, a landmark for our genre, shot a picture about the vengeful dead who decided to punish the trio who defiled their graves. An undeservedly forgotten film with Dominic Purcell (before he slipped into trash and a passer).

7. Messengers (2007)

CP Rating: 6.0

Horror film from the Hong Kong directors Pan (responsible for the original horror franchise “The Eye”), produced by Sam Raimi himself (“Evil Dead”, “Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness”). The film tells about the Solomon family, forced to change the noisy Chicago for a secluded farm somewhere in the wilds of North Dakota. It is clear that nothing good awaits them there … Of the actors, one can single out Dylan McDermot and a very young Kristen Stewart. The film itself is somewhat reminiscent of the early works of Stephen King.

6. Vault (2010)

CP Rating: 6.8

This horror film can be described as a mixture of “Split” and “Astral”, starring Julianne Moore (Lisey’s Story, Telekinesis) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Dracula, Black Butterfly). Interesting, thoughtful, atmospheric.

5. Darkness comes (2003)

CP Rating: 5.8

“Darkness Falls” tells about the same story as “Lights Out” and “The Boogeyman”, except that it came out earlier: the main character is forced to return to his native land to defeat the demon he has already encountered before. By the way, the operator of this film is the same as that of the above-described “Ghosts”.

4. White Noise (2004)

CP Rating: 6.5

Michael Keaton plays a widower who uses an electronic voice phenomenon to investigate the death of his wife. Interesting. Atmospheric.

3. Dead End (2003)

CP Rating: 6.7

Horror with a viscous atmosphere tells the story of a family who went to relatives for Christmas. And everything would have been fine if for the first time in 20 years they had not decided to change the route … Well, we all know how it ends. Dead End starred retired genre artists Lin Shaye and Ray Wise in several lead roles.

2. The last coming of the devil (2021)

CP Rating: 5.2

It seems like another story about another exorcist. Unless it was filmed in Mexican locations. And the logic of realism (as far as it is generally appropriate in horror) suffers a little. But here’s the atmosphere and some individual scenes – mmm, buzz.

1. To stay alive (2006)

CP Rating: 6.3

This picture has nothing to do with the American TV series of the same name and the Norwegian franchise. By the way, the only slasher of the House of Mouse (although Disney has other horror films in general), but don’t let that bother you. According to the plot, a group of young people are trying to figure out how the recent death of their friend and the computer game that he tested the day before are connected. Pleasant actors (some of which flashed in more well-known projects) and good direction by William Brent Bell (dilogue about the Brahms doll, Werewolf, Possessed), as well as a good story at the heart of the plot, left a pleasant impression. And the film itself at one time managed to scare even during daytime viewing.

This concludes today’s selection. I hope that everyone has found in it something suitable for themselves. In conclusion, I would like to ask: what little-known horror films of recent years have you come across? What would you strongly advise others to do?

rating of the most interesting according to KP

Frame from the film “Scream 6” (2023)

The genre of horror is one of the classics in cinema. He appeared at the dawn of his formation along with comedies and he was immediately appreciated by those who like to tickle their nerves. Since then, actors in costumes of monsters and monsters have been replaced by special effects and computer graphics, which are easily confused with reality, and viewers are willing to pay for a ticket to the cinema to get a dose of fear and adrenaline. So Top 10 horror films of 2023.

Rating of the best horror films of 2023: top 10 according to Afisha-KP

According to Jewish mythology, pregnant women and babies become its victims. Interesting fact: If everything is clear with Abizu’s activities – terrorizing pregnant women and hunting for babies, then mythology has not completely decided on the appearance of this demon. More often, Abiza is depicted as a half-fish, half-snake.

The picture tells about the ship “Demeter”, on which the coffin with the body of Count Dracula was transported from Transylvania to London. When the ship landed in port, it turned out that the entire crew on board was dead, and the captain’s body was tied to the helm. There is no explanation for what happened.

Interesting fact: Bram Stoker, according to one version, could write off the image of Dracula from his boss, Henry Irving, who was an actor and owner of the Lyceum Theater in London. Irving’s character was unbearable, and he often mocked his secretary Stoker.

Young people leave their hometown of Woodsboro to start life from scratch. All four will move to New York, where the main action should unfold.

Interesting fact: The sixth part of the franchise will be the first film in which Neve Campbell’s character Sidney Prescott does not appear. Neve refused to act because of the fee that did not suit her.

6. A Quiet Place 3

  • Release date: March 31, 2023, USA
  • Directed by: Jeff Nichols
  • Cast: pre-John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe

Photo: still from the film A Quiet Place 2

Plot: The content of the film is still kept secret. However, actor John Krasinski lifted the veil of secrecy, saying that in the second part of the film there are several Easter eggs with a hint of the plot of the third. It is possible that this will be a spin-off, and we will see how blind monsters invade our planet.

Interesting fact: The first picture was taken in 36 days. The opening scene was filmed last, due to the length of actor John Krasinski’s beard. At the beginning of the picture, it was supposed to be shorter than in the final. After principal photography, John’s beard was trimmed and the scene was filmed.
