    Computer screws, which ones to use?

    6-32 screws are often used for hard drives and container parts; for covers and attachment of daughterboards. M3 screws are used to secure optical disk drives, disk drives. 4-40 screws are used on VGA, DVI, serial ports, parallel ports, and old game ports.

    However, some manufacturers have designed housings without screws and that do not require tools for assembly and disassembly.

    6-32 screws

    6-32 is a unified thread standard. The diameter of the main thread is 3.505 mm or 0.1380 inches, 32 threads per inch and a length of 0.79375 millimeters.

    This is by far the most common type of screw in a PC. These screws are used:

    • to protect the power supply;
    • To keep the motherboard above the riser;
    • to attach the hard drives to the chassis;
    • to keep the daughtercards in place;
    • to support the different parts of the frame;
    • close your eyelids.

    These screws often have a slot for Phillips type 2 screwdrivers and a hexagonal section for a socket wrench on their heads.

    For cover fasteners, some manufacturers use thumb screws that allow the computer to be opened without tools.

    M3 screw

    The M3 screw is a screw with metric thread.

    This screw is the second most commonly used type of screw in PCs. More precisely, it is M3-0.50, where 0.50 indicates that the thread length is 0.50 millimeters. 0.50 is the standard pitch for M3 screws. The screw thread diameter is 3 mm (0.12 inches).

    Like 6-32 screws, these screws can be used with size 2 Phillips screwdrivers.

    These screws are used:

    • to protect optical drives and floppy disk drives;
    • To keep the motherboard above the riser;
    • to repair 2.5″ SSD;
    • to protect 2.5″ hard drives.

    These screws can be recognized by their thinner threads than those of 6-32 screws.

    Motherboard riser

    Motherboard risers or standoffs are used to attach the motherboard to the case chassis without the circuits and solder touching the chassis.

    This riser is both a 6-32 type screw and a nut with a hexagonal section body. The assembly of these two elements into one is also called a spacer.

    Usually a 6-32 screw is needed to hold the motherboard above the riser.

    In some cases, a spacer is used to distance certain elements of the circuit board that heat up, thus optimizing ventilation and heat evacuation by the fans.

    4-40 manual screw

    4-40 knurled head screws are used to hold the connectors in place, so that the pins do not loosen under the weight of the cables.

    These screws are usually in pairs on the VGA, DVI, serial, parallel, and PC game port connectors.

    Computer fasteners: screws, screws, self-tapping screws

    As you know,
    folk wisdom says:

    A screw hammered with a hammer holds better than a nail wrapped with a screwdriver.

    On this page, I will try to collect all the main types of fasteners, such as screws, bolts, wood screws and self-tapping screws, used in assembling computers and various computer devices, as well as give a brief description of their scope.

    Below are photographs and a brief description of the most common connectors.

    This type of bolt is used for screwing into the inner plane of the case of the system unit , for the subsequent attachment of the motherboard . Nickel-plated and copper-plated bolts differ in diameter and thread pitch. Copper alloy bolts differ only in length.

    Here are several types of screws for fixing plastic parts in a 5.25” bay. These can be plastic skids, a ventilation and cooling system, etc.

    The photos above show the most common screws. They are used to attach the AGP , PCI , PCI Express and other interface cards to the internal slots of personal computers and servers. Also, these bolts are used to fasten the side walls of many cases of system units, as well as to fasten the power supply. Well, and most importantly, it is these screws that are used to mount hard drives , i.e. HDD or hard drives , as you like.

    These screws are used to secure the FDD drives, i.e. flops and CD drives ( CD-ROM , DVD-RW , Blu-ray (BD-RE), etc.).

    These screws are not used in all cases, but generally not a bad thing. The main purpose is to reduce the transmission of vibration between hard disk / CD drives and the system unit case.

    This kind of self-tapping screw is designed to mount motley fans, ranging from 80×80 to infinity, inside the system unit case for additional cooling of the latter and preventing failure due to overheating. The same screws are also used to mount the fans inside the power supply.

    These nice screws come across much less often (at least to me) of all the previous ones. They are intended for fastening the side covers of the system unit case.

    I don’t think this is an exhaustive list of fasteners used to assemble a computer. Repairmen and service departments may well supplement the existing photographs.

    In conclusion, I want to share a photo of jumpers , used mainly in hard drives. Today, these tiny details have begun to lose their former relevance. But 10 years ago, it was absolutely impossible to do without them.

    This is especially remembered by those who used several hard drives with an IDE interface. No one really had any money, so they set up ordinary computers as servers. They put on 3-4 hard drives. It was impossible to do without jumpers. CD-Rom also used jumpers. Primary Master , Secondary Master. There were four types of priority in total. Selecting the boot priority through the BIOS was not an option, but the Cable-Select mode did not always work, so it was practically not used. Those were the times.

    • motherboard;
    • individual boards in expansion slots;
    • hard drive;
    • keyboard;
    • body parts.

    Rugged laptop computers use fasteners as decoration. In addition, such screws are used in other devices, for example, mobile phones, tablets, cameras.

    Types

    According to the fixing method, the screws are of the following varieties:

    • bolts are screwed into threaded holes and nuts, electronic components are fixed with them;
    • self-tapping screws are used to install parts on the body and to connect the elements of the body.

    Unusual mounting options secure the processor cooling system. They have springs that smooth out shock and vibration, protect fragile parts.

    Different companies use different fasteners:

    • in most cases, their length is from 2 to 12 millimeters;
    • thread diameter – M1.6; M2; M2.5 and M3.

    Composition of a laptop repair kit

    The head can be a cross (most often), straight, hexagonal, six-, eight-pointed star. Therefore, they need different screwdrivers. Apple uses a five-pointed star slot, which requires repairs only by specialists with experience. The rest simply do not have such a screwdriver available.

    There are many standards, so a laptop screw kit can be purchased. It can be big or small. In addition, the screws in a laptop kit can be of different quality. To check the quality of the bolt, damage the slot with a screwdriver. The bolt is of high quality if only scratches remain after this procedure.     Universal screwdriver for laptop repair

    Screwdrivers required for screws:

    • With plastic blade. It is necessary for careful disassembly, as it does not damage or leave scratches on the case. If such a screwdriver does not fit, use a steel screwdriver.
    • With steel tip. It is chosen if there are problems with slots, edges, and the screw cannot be unscrewed. It can come off and cause damage to the part, so the action must be careful.

    Notebook disassembly instruction looks like this:

    • Turn off the computer completely. If the laptop does not turn off, press the shutdown button until the laptop turns off (about 5 seconds).
    • We remove all external devices from the laptop: the charger, plugs and memory cards from the card reader, wireless mouse receivers, and so on.
    • We check that there are no burning bulbs.
    • Turning over the computer.
    • Remove the battery.
    • Laptops have many different screws. We write down or take photographs / sketches of where the screws were.
    • Remove all screws. Partially the screws are signed.
    • We remove all plugs on the screws and latches, which are located on the back side.
    • Unscrew all the screws under the plugs.
    • We take out the drive, hard drive, wireless network modules, random access memory and others.
    • We unscrew all the screws under the drive, hard drive, battery and so on.
    • Disconnect all cables and connectors.
    • Turning over the computer. It is necessary to open the cover with the display.
    • There are several ways to remove the keyboard. There are usually small latches on the top or around the perimeter that need to be pushed in, or screws or latches on the bottom of the computer that support the keyboard.
    • If the case cover is solid around the keyboard and there are no plastic frames, remove the keyboard. If the case around the keyboard is divided into 2 or more components, it is impossible to remove or there is a plastic frame – remove the frame or the top.
    • Remove the keyboard and disconnect its cable.
    • We unscrew all the screws that are under it.
    • Disable all cables and connectors where possible.
    • Remove the top cover of the laptop body, use a specialized spatula or other device.
    • We disconnect all cables and connectors that we can.
    • We unscrew the bolts securing the display, motherboard, and other components.
    • Reassemble in reverse order.

    How to remove a licked bolt

    One way to loosen a stripped screw using a soldering iron

    If you need to remove a licked bolt, follow these steps:

    1. Apply silicone grease to the damaged bolt (industrial grease is not recommended).
    2. Heat the head with a soldering iron. If the bolt is screwed into plastic, a pulse tool should be selected.
    3. Make other splines. To do this, attach the sting to where the slot was, hit the screwdriver with a hammer. You don’t have to hit very hard. As a result, the head is deformed and a new slot is formed.
    4. A stripped screw can be loosened by creating new splines. To prevent sawdust from being inside the laptop, constantly use a vacuum cleaner in the process, after the procedure you should wipe this place.

    A laptop screw set is a must have not only for electronics repairers, but also for owners who care about laptops. One package is enough to assemble the entire working system.

    Inspection of laptops often reveals the loss of one or more small screws, the lack of which is quite difficult to immediately notice. If the case and internal circuit boards are not firmly fixed, the functionality of the computer is impaired, and this is fraught with problems.
