Which bulbs to choose for home lighting
Finding the right light bulb is not as easy as it seems at first glance. Now there are so many varieties of light bulbs in stores that it is easy to get confused in the selection process. Which is better: LED, energy-saving or incandescent. How to choose a light bulb for a specific lamp or chandelier. All these questions always arise from buyers of the online store where I work.
Marketing research of the Russian market of lamps: complex analysis and forecast
In my opinion, standard incandescent lamps have lost their relevance and it is worth buying them only in one case – if you need a lamp of a non-standard shape. Most often, it is these light bulbs that have an unusual design that fits well into retro interiors.
Otherwise, incandescent lamps lose out to other types. For comparison: when consuming 100 W, an incandescent lamp produces 1000 lumens of light, an energy-saving lamp gives the same light when consuming 20 W, and an LED lamp at 10 W. It seems to me that the comparison of energy efficiency is significant.
In addition to low luminous efficacy, incandescent lamps have a short service life – an average of 1000 hours.
Pros: variety of shapes, low price.
Cons: low energy efficiency, short service life.
Only 1,000 hours of incandescent bulb life
Halogen bulbs have a filament like incandescent bulbs, but they shine about 30% brighter for the same amount of power.
Halogen lamps are good for lighting and lighting accents. They are often mounted under hanging cabinets in the kitchen or inserted into special swivel sconces to direct light to different parts of the room and to decorative interior details.
The soft light of these lamps creates a cozy atmosphere, but they are not very suitable for general lighting: they do not work for long and get very hot, so they cannot be inserted into lamps made of fusible materials.
Halogen lamp life approx. 2000-3000 hours. There is an important nuance – halogen bulbs are extremely sensitive to power surges, which is why they often burn out. There are two solutions: use a dimmer or install a soft starter. So the light bulbs will be protected from burnout and last longer – up to 8,000-12,000 hours, which is still less than the life of energy-saving lamps.
Pros: Soft light suitable for spotlights and backlighting.
Cons: sensitive to power surges, get very hot.
Halogen lamps get very hot and should be used with care. They are suitable for installation on any surfaces and in any fixtures. They do not heat up during operation, therefore they are absolutely safe.
Approximate life 10,000-40,000 hours. They are more expensive than incandescent lamps, but much cheaper than other types of energy-saving lamps, which is why they have become so popular.
It should be noted that fluorescent lamps are not environmentally friendly. They work on toxic mercury vapor, so they require special disposal – you can’t just throw them in the trash can. In addition, such bulbs flare up for a rather long time after being turned on – some models need up to 15 minutes to gain brightness.
Pros: low price, long service life.
Cons: non-environmental, dim light immediately after switching on.
In terms of price, LED lamps have long been equal to energy-saving ones, and the high cost was probably their only drawback. In all other respects, these bulbs are good.
They last from 30,000 to 50,000 hours, reduce lighting costs by up to 85%, do not break, do not require special disposal, work without thermal, ultraviolet and infrared radiation.
The luminous flux range of LEDs is from 60 to 340 degrees. A narrow beam is suitable for backlighting and accent lighting, while broad beam lamps are suitable for general light, such as ceiling lights and chandeliers.
An important point: the pulsation of an LED light bulb is a sure sign of its poor quality, so you should pay attention to this when buying.
Pros: long service life, environmental friendliness, affordable price.
Cons: Poor quality lamp can produce pulsing light.
Filament lamps are a new type of LED. They have become a brilliant alternative to incandescent lamps, prized for their looks and the play of light they give.
Filament lamps mimic the look of incandescent lamps and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can even be used as an independent lamp, their design is so unusual. Filament lamps are well suited for crystal chandeliers: they give a play of light that conventional LED lamps cannot provide.
The light from filament lamps is soft and usually warm. They are produced with all possible types of plinths: threaded, pin and soffit. In terms of service life, energy efficiency and brightness, they are not inferior to conventional LED bulbs.
Pros: unusual design, energy efficiency, warm and bright light.
Cons: not suitable for every interior.
Filament lamps look like incandescent lamps but have all the characteristics of LED lamps
- Incandescent, if you need a light bulb with an unusual shape.
These lamps are best used for small decorative lamps. It should be borne in mind that incandescent lamps do not last long and consume a large amount of electricity.
- Halogen for spot or decorative light bulbs. Halogen bulbs last longer than incandescent bulbs, but they get very hot, so they are not suitable for lamps made of fusible materials.
- Fluorescent, if you need the cheapest energy-saving light bulbs. They work for a long time, but are not environmentally friendly and require special disposal.
- LED for versatile and practical light bulbs. They are environmentally friendly, energy efficient and last up to 50,000 hours.
- Filament, if you need light bulbs with the appearance of incandescent lamps and LED characteristics. They give a soft and warm light, serve for a long time, look unusual and become a noticeable interior detail.

The chandelier was picked up, additional lighting too. It remains to find suitable bulbs. You approach the stand and your eyes widen – how many of them! You get lost among the characteristics and descriptions, not knowing what is right for your home.
In this article we will tell you what characteristics you should pay attention to and what you need.
Eye comfort, safety and energy savings are the three main components of a quality light bulb. What you choose in any case, regardless of other characteristics.
Plinth
Information about the type of plinth required is usually indicated on the luminaire box or on the cover. Most lighting fixtures today use an E-14 base with a diameter of 14mm. and base E-27 with a diameter of 27mm. If the ceiling of the chandelier is small, or the lamp has some specifics, then a pin base is used. It is indicated by the letter G and a number that indicates the distance in millimeters between the pins. The most common models are G5.3, which are simply inserted into the lamp connector and GU10, which are inserted and rotated a quarter of a turn.
Shape
You choose the shape of the light bulb according to your preference, but it is important that the base fits the luminaire. Threaded lamps are in the form of a pear, a ball, a candle or a candle in the wind. The latter are perfect for open models of chandeliers and sconces. Pin bases come in the form of a small capsule or a flat reflector.
Types
Incandescent lamps is the first type of electric lamps. They are used for both ordinary lighting and decorative. Their only advantage is their low cost. The disadvantages include poor color quality, high power consumption, short service life and fragility.
Halogen lamps is a modified version of incandescent lamps. These lamps shine 30% brighter than incandescent lamps, while using less energy. Of the minuses: they create a stroboscopic effect, which negatively affects performance and attentiveness.
Fluorescent lamps – often used in offices, shop windows and showrooms. Their advantages: wide color range, consume 4-5 times less energy than incandescent lamps, have a low bulb temperature. Disadvantages: the mercury content in the lamp reduces the production of melatonin in the body, weakening the immune system and causing lack of sleep, nervousness. The stroboscopic effect causes a feeling of fatigue.
Energy-saving lamps – their feature is that they have an electronic unit that provides ignition and further burning of the lamp. Thanks to him, the energy-saving lamp lights up without flickering and works without flickering. The amount of electricity consumption of these lamps is reduced by 80%, and the service life is longer compared to conventional incandescent lamps and is 6,000-15,000 hours, depending on the type. You can also choose the color of the glow. The disadvantages include their high cost, but their long service life and low power consumption compensate for this disadvantage. Lamps cannot simply be thrown into the general garbage, they must be taken to special collection points, and if the lamp breaks at home, then it is necessary to treat the contaminated area in the same way as if you had broken a mercury thermometer.
LED lamps are resistant to temperature changes, easy to assemble and use, they do not get very hot during operation and therefore they have a light plastic body. Thanks to this, they can be used where others cannot be installed. For example, in stretch ceilings. LEDs are 4-7 times more efficient than conventional incandescent or halogen equivalents, have a life span of 15,000 to 50,000 hours, and illuminate 5-10 times more area than halogen lamps. LED lamps can be used for landscape lighting, mounted in paving stones, asphalt or walls. It is ideal for marking and illuminating paths, car parks and places where changing lamps is difficult, such as in aquariums and swimming pools. Their only drawback is their high cost. But a single LED lamp reduces energy consumption by up to 65 kWh compared to an incandescent lamp. This means that these expenses will pay off.
Filament lamps are considered a type of LED. They just look like incandescent bulbs when turned on.
