Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet, and there’s support for Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service, making it easy for everyone to access. It has a large, Legal-size flatbed (8.5″ x 14″) scanner as well as an automatic feeder with single-pass duplex scanning. Optical character recognition is present; it lets you scan documents into PDFs for quick keyword searches.

   The regular toner cartridges yield around 2,900 black and 1,400 color prints, so they don’t need frequent replacement. It’s the best Brother all-in-one printer we’ve tested, as it has plenty of features and all-around great performance. You can connect to the printer via USB or Wi-Fi, and it’s compatible with Brother’s mobile companion app, which you can use to print, scan, copy, perform maintenance tasks, and order supplies. The scanner produces high-quality scans and processes up to 20 pages per minute through its automatic feeder; however, it doesn’t support duplex scanning, so you’ll still have to flip the pages manually when scanning double-sided sheets.

   Printing-wise, this model produces amazing-looking documents and does so quickly, churning out 17 black or 15 color documents per minute. As for photos, they look detailed but slightly grainy with washed-out blacks. You won’t need to worry about maintenance cost, as its ink cartridges last a long time and are relatively cheap.    For our best budget pick, we chose the Brother MFC-J1205W, also known as the Brother MFC-J1215DW at Walmart. This color inkjet model is a great option for people who print more than the occasional one-off project. It feels sturdily built despite its affordable price, with a design that allows easy access to paper jams and ink cartridges. You still get Wi-Fi and USB connectivity, as well as Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service support. It has a scanner with extendable hinges to accommodate thick items like textbooks, but it lacks an automatic feeder, so you’ll have to scan each page manually.

Brother is a well-known brand that offers practical and efficient business solutions through its printer lineups. They tend to produce sturdy and well-built printers with high page yields at an affordable cost, and their ink or toner cartridges need replacing less. However, their ink or toner cartridges are more expensive than their competitors. Their printers also don’t usually have Bluetooth support; this can be disappointing if multiple people share a printer.

Don’t think that I’m constantly talking to the equipment under test, but this time, taking out the new Brother HL-2030 printer from the box, I said to the smallest Samsung ML-1510 laser printer standing on my desk: “Well, Now you have a brother.” The similarity is obvious: the same design scheme, almost the same dimensions, and the design has a lot in common. True, the Brother product looks more stylish, largely due to rounded edges and noble colors that emphasize the softness of the body lines.

The HL-2030 is the newest addition to Brother’s new line of home and small office printers. Print speeds up to 16 ppm (also available with 20 ppm HL-2040). The first page out time is 10 seconds, and the maximum print resolution is 2400x600dpi (with emulation) for Windows and Mac OS, 600x600dpi for Linux. Cartridge resource – 2500 pages (starter cartridge is designed for 1500 pages), photoconductor – 12 thousand pages. Interface – USB 2.0, control language – GDI.

Well, the main achievement is the dimensions of 371x355x165.5 mm and the weight of 6.5 kg.

The results of the latest statistical surveys clearly show that laser printers, which were previously a purely office tool, are now increasingly becoming a companion to the home computer. First of all, this is facilitated by a reduction in their dimensions and a decrease in cost. Last year’s success in sales of Samsung’s smallest home models is another confirmation of this. And the appearance of the younger model Brother HL-2030 with a retail price of about $156 is sure to intensify competition in this sector.

The print quality at 600x600dpi did not cause any particular complaints. The finest character accuracy and uniformity of the gray gradient were excellent, only solid black areas looked imperfect due to slightly different density. A more serious remark about the quality of prints arose when testing in the 2400×600 dpi mode. Here, some distortions of the boundaries of the test figures were observed. However, the use of this mode in printers of this class generally seems redundant.

Despite its ultra-small size, the printer has enough features for any application, including banner printing and a toner saver mode. True, the latter was somewhat surprising – visually, the decrease in the density of the dye was almost not felt.

The printer is simple and easy to use. Three indicators on the top panel make it easy to navigate in case of unforeseen situations. Of particular note is the manufacturer’s concern for the unprepared user. The kit includes a very detailed and understandable manual in Russian, and an animated instruction on a CD will allow you to connect and prepare the product for work in a matter of minutes, even for an inexperienced user.

Further reduction in the size of laser printers has design limitations, and apparently, the dimensions of the “kids” from Samsung and Brother are already the limit. But if manufacturers of home models could reduce their noise level, even at the expense of performance, then users would meet this with joy and understanding.
