Technology in the monitor industry has improved in recent years, and monitors are now becoming suitable for watching multimedia content like TVs and shows. While TVs still offer the best performance for that, they tend to be expensive and are usually available in larger sizes, which isn’t ideal if you have limited space. Getting a monitor is a great alternative if you want something smaller. When looking for the best monitor for movies, you’ll also want to consider a monitor’s contrast ratio, black uniformity, and local dimming to know if it’s a good choice for watching content in dark rooms. It’s also important to get something with a high resolution so that you can get an immersive viewing experience.
We’ve bought and tested more than 270 monitors, and below you’ll find our recommendations for the best multimedia monitors that are available to buy. Also see our recommendations for the best 4k HDR monitors, the best 32-inch monitors, and the best 4k monitors.

The best monitor we’ve tested for consuming multimedia content is the Dell Alienware AW3423DW.
It has a QD-OLED panel that makes it a great choice for watching shows and movies in dark rooms. It combines the perfect black levels of an OLED with the wide range of colors from a QLED display. It means that blacks look deep and inky in the dark, and colors look bright and vivid thanks to the remarkable color volume. It’s an ultrawide display with a 21:9 aspect ratio, which is ideal for watching ultrawide movies as it fills out the screen, but you’ll see black bars at the sides if you’re watching 16:9 content, like some shows.
It also has wide viewing angles that make the image remain consistent from the sides, which is great for sharing your screen with someone. Sadly, it has raised black levels in bright rooms, so blacks look closer to purple in a well-lit environment, but that just means it performs best in dark rooms. Also, OLEDs are prone to burn-in when exposed to the same static elements over time, like if you’re constantly watching the news, but it isn’t a problem if you watch different types of shows and movies.

If you find the Dell Alienware AW3423DW too expensive or simply don’t like the ultrawide format, check out the LG 27GR95QE-B. It’s still a high-end monitor that’s fantastic for media consumption, but it’s different from the Dell in a few ways.
It has a smaller 27-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio, so you don’t get the same immersive viewing experience when watching movies in an ultrawide format. The OLED panel it uses is different from the QD-OLED panel in the Dell, meaning it doesn’t get as bright, and colors aren’t as vivid for a slightly worse HDR experience.
Luckily, you still get all the same benefits of an OLED panel with perfect blacks and no blooming around bright objects. It also has wide viewing angles that make it ideal for watching content with a friend or two as they’ll see a consistent image from the sides. It doesn’t have the same raised black level issue as the Dell either, meaning that the picture quality is equally great in bright rooms as it is in dark rooms.

If you’re concerned about the burn-in risk associated with OLEDs or you want something a bit cheaper, consider the Dell U3223QE. It doesn’t have an OLED panel like the LG 27GR95QE-B, meaning it can’t deliver the same perfect black levels. Instead, it has only a decent contrast ratio with a terrible local dimming feature that isn’t effective at improving the contrast. Still, there isn’t much blooming around bright objects, which is great for watching content with dark scenes. This monitor has a bigger 32-inch screen with a 4k resolution, which helps deliver a more immersive viewing experience with sharper images.
It has remarkable color accuracy before calibration, which is important if you want life-like images without calibrating the monitor in SDR. It also has alright HDR peak brightness and displays a wide range of colors in HDR, but those colors are undersaturated. It also has bad color volume, and if that bothers you, there’s a smaller variant, the Dell U2723QE, that has better color volume in HDR for more vivid and bright colors. It costs less, but because it has a smaller screen, it doesn’t deliver the same immersive viewing experience.

If you want something cheaper in the lower mid-range price category, check out the Samsung Smart Monitor M8 S32BM80.
It has a 4k, 32-inch screen like the Dell U3223QE but worse color accuracy and a worse color gamut. It’s also a different type of monitor because it has a built-in smart system, essentially making it a 32-inch TV without a tuner. You don’t need to use a computer to watch your favorite content because the Tizen OS built-in smart platform is easy-to-use and has a ton of apps you can download. It even comes with a remote to navigate the menus, which has a mic that you can use with Alexa and Bixby voice assistants.
For picture quality, it’s a great choice for watching movies because it displays deep blacks thanks to its high native contrast ratio and has good black uniformity with minimal blooming. It doesn’t have a local dimming feature but displays deep blacks. It also has more picture settings than most monitors, allowing you to adjust the settings to your liking.

If you’re looking for the best monitor for watching movies and are on a budget, the Dell S3221QS is a good choice. While it costs more than other budget-friendly monitors, those tend to perform worse for watching multimedia content, so this monitor offers the best value. It has a 4k, 32-inch screen like the Samsung Smart Monitor M8 S32BM80, but the main difference is that it doesn’t have a smart system. Although this is a neat feature on the Samsung monitor, you can save money by getting a monitor without one and just using your PC.
It also has a VA panel with a high native contrast ratio, and while it doesn’t have a local dimming feature to further improve the black levels, it still looks good in dark rooms, and the black uniformity isn’t bad.
It has a subtle 1800R curve which helps bring the edges of the screen more within your field of vision if you sit directly in front of it. However, it isn’t an ideal choice for watching content with a friend because it has narrow viewing angles that make the image look washed out from the sides.

Notable Mentions
- Samsung LS34BG850SNXZA:
The Samsung LS34BG850SNXZA is a QD-OLED monitor like the Dell Alienware AW3423DW that uses a smart system built-in. It’s great if you want to watch content without a computer, but it costs more than the Dell.
See our review - Cooler Master Tempest GP27U:
The Cooler Master Tempest GP27U is a 27-inch monitor with Mini LED backlighting. It gets much brighter and has a more vivid HDR experience than the LG 27GR95QE-B. However, it has some bugs, and it can be harder to find.
See our review - Samsung LS43BM702UNXZA:
The Samsung LS43BM702UNXZA is a 43-inch smart monitor with a bigger screen than the Samsung Smart Monitor M8 S32BM80. It costs less, which is ideal if you want the 43-inch screen, but the picture quality isn’t as good as it has lower brightness and fewer features.
See our review - Gigabyte AORUS FO48U:
The Gigabyte AORUS F048U is an OLED monitor like the LG 27GR95QE-B but has a much bigger 48-inch screen. Only get the Gigabyte if you want the bigger screen. Otherwise, the LG is still fantastic for watching multimedia content.

The 27- and 32-inch Samsung M5, M7, and M8 displays are computer monitors that can moonlight as smart TVs.

Samsung’s Smart Monitor M8. Image: Samsung
Samsung has announced US pricing and release information for a trio of new “smart monitors” — its lineup of computer displays that can also function as small smart TVs. So you get HDMI and USB ports for plugging in peripherals, but also built-in video streaming apps like Netflix and YouTube, AirPlay support, and Samsung’s Gaming Hub with access to cloud gaming services from Xbox and Nvidia in select countries.
At the bottom of the range there’s the 1080p Samsung M5 (technically the M50C) which starts as $279.99 for the 27-inch model, rising to $299.99 for the 32-inch version. Then there’s the 4K M7 (M70C — $549.99 for 27-inch, $599.99 for 32-inch), and M8 (M80C — $649.99 for 27-inch, $699.99 for 32-inch). In the US, the monitors will be available from June, per Samsung’s press release. The Smart Monitor M80C was originally announced in January at CES.
Samsung’s M7 Smart Monitor.Image: Samsung
While Samsung has been offering this mix of monitor and TV functionality since 2020, new for this year is a “My Contents” feature that’s designed to show a “welcome screen” on the display with photos, calendar entries, and weather information when it detects your smartphone nearby. It sounds similar to the kind of information you might expect to see on a smart display from Amazon or Google, albeit more limited in scope (and without the touchscreen).
Otherwise, the monitors’ specs are roughly in line with what we’ve seen in previous years. All three models come with built-in speakers, 60Hz refresh rates, and remote controls in the box, but the M8 is the most feature-rich of the bunch. It’s 4K with support for HDR10 Plus, has a peak brightness of 400 nits, and comes with a webcam in the box for video calls. It’s got a built-in SmartThings Hub for controlling compatible smart home devices, and comes in a choice of white, pink, blue, or green colors.
Step down to the M7, meanwhile, and peak brightness drops to 300 nits, there’s HDR10 rather than HDR10 Plus, and you don’t get a SmartThings Hub or webcam in the box. But there’s still voice assistant support via the likes of Alexa, a height-adjustable stand that can pivot and tilt, and a 65W USB-C port in addition to an HDMI 2. 0 port, and two USB-A ports.
Finally, the M5 is only 1080p, with a peak brightness of 250 nits. There’s no USB-C (but you get an additional HDMI port as a consolation prize), nor does it come with support for voice assistants.
As in previous years, Samsung’s 2023 smart monitors seem to be aiming to be jack of all trades, and master of none. 60Hz refresh rates mean they’re not going to compete with more premium gaming monitors, and their small sizes and limited selection of ports will be offputting to many TV buyers. But if you’re space constrained and need a single screen to do it all, Samsung’s smart monitors are valiant box-tickers.

Why do you need a smart monitor? Samsung S27AM500NI Smart Monitor Review Eldorado Choice
8 min. for reading
Eldorado’s Choice
Computers and laptops
The editors of Eldoblog tested
smart monitor Samsung S27AM500NI to answer the main questions – what is it, to whom
needed and how to use it?
Appearance
The new gadget is indistinguishable from the brand’s regular 27-inch monitors. Right left
and on top – ultra-thin frames, barely visible to the eye. Bottom – wider strip
and a small ledge with the Samsung logo. Minimalistic stand, with one inclined leg
and wide stable platform.
At first glance, the monitor seems standard. It has a minimalist design.
The back panel is corrugated, with deep horizontal grooves. Of the visible
communications – two USB Type-A ports and two HDMI video inputs.
The stand is in the box separately —
it must be screwed with a Phillips screwdriver. There are fastenings for screws at a distance
100 mm – suitable for those who want to attach the monitor to a VESA-compatible bracket.
By connecting a DVB-T2 set-top box, you can turn it into a TV.
View product
Screen and picture
The monitor is based on a 27″ vertical alignment matrix
pixels (VA). Resolution – 1920×1080, 60Hz refresh rate.
The device can be placed on a table like a regular monitor – the optimal distance
a little more than a meter to the eyes. The picture in this case looks clear and does not crumble
to separate points.
The image is bright and saturated, but a little lacking in dark scenes
the depth of the shadows, and in the light – the brightness of the background. Still, the main purpose
devices – work, and films and videos in second place.
An interesting feature of the monitor is adaptive
backlight adjustment. The brightness is adjusted according to the level of lighting in the room.
During the entire time of testing, I never once wanted to change it manually.

Main functions
After 5 minutes of testing, I forgave the monitor for large dimensions
and simple appearance. The device turned out to be a “thing in itself” –
universal multimedia workstation for home and small office. Here’s what I liked.
The monitor works without a computer. It already has a browser, video player and even
Microsoft 365 office suite for work with office tasks. Additionally, you can install
applications for the Tizen operating system – they are familiar to owners of Samsung smart TVs.
Among them are Yandex.Browser, VLC player, Angry Birds game, ivi online cinema, music
Deezer service.
The monitor is also compatible with popular online cinemas. Just plug it in
to the network via Wi-Fi and launch YouTube, Netflix, Megogo or Okko. Resolution video
1920×1080 at 60 frames per second for this screen size
It’s enough.
The monitor supports remote connection to a computer. With the help of the application
Remote Access allows you to broadcast the image from the screen regardless of the distance –
at least from Novosibirsk to Moscow. You can work with computers and laptops
running Windows 10 – including the home version.
Monitor turns flagship smartphones
and Samsung tablets to desktop computers. DeX technology is supported, including
including Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Tab S7 models. By connecting a mobile
gadget, you can work with three mobile applications simultaneously on the big screen.
Android smartphone owners can cast video via Chromecast, and Apple via
AirPlay 2. If you have a Samsung gadget with an NFC module, all you have to do to start streaming is tap
it to the frame of the monitor.
View product
How to use it
for Samsung 8000 series TVs. Buttons adjust the volume, switch menu items, turn on
video or pause it. For online cinemas, it is quite enough. Voice control
implemented conveniently. I launched standard applications like YouTube, adjusted the volume
and learned the weather forecast for today. You can also control your smart home through the app
SmartThings, but I did not have time to test this function. When trying to connect a smartphone
or computer prompts appear on the screen – for those who do not like long
instructions.
To work with office applications, I connected a wireless kit
from keyboard and mouse. Gadgets from other manufacturers are also supported –
they can be connected both via Bluetooth and via a USB adapter. Minimum delays, cursor
responds vividly to my movements, letters appear on the screen immediately after pressing a key. Nice,
that the monitor has speakers with a total power of 10 watts. For music and blogs on YouTube
that was enough. The sound is clear and loud, although without “highlights”.
When using the monitor, you need to remember – if
you do not connect a computer or smartphone, it will only work with cloud
services. Like smart TVs, its memory is only for installing apps.
View product
What is the result?
Samsung S27AM500NI smart monitor is for those who don’t want to buy a laptop
or PC at home, but works remotely, usually editing files in cloud storages,
sends hundreds of e-mails a day, and after that – likes to watch the series on Netflix.
For more complex tasks, you still need a computer.
This is also an ideal choice for Android smartphone owners. By connecting your Galaxy
Note 20, I was able to edit a short video and type this text
on a Bluetooth keyboard. Bonus – DeX technology is fast and responsive
to commands as fast as a regular laptop.
And to use the gadget as a regular monitor, use the HDMI ports.
You can connect a game console or Blu-ray player to it.

Review of the smart monitor Samsung M5
Author: Artyom Semin. Photo: Alexander Ruzhechka
The Samsung M5 is a 27-inch Full HD monitor with speakers and TV functions. On it you can watch a movie with a remote control on the couch, and then work by connecting it to a computer. The smart monitor system has a semblance of office applications, so you can work on it without a PC. How convenient all this is in reality, read in the new review.

Monitor Series-
Why are they needed? , play and work on the same screen.0005
So you can open a movie in a browser on any monitor. That’s right. With a smart monitor, you will be lying on the couch browsing the Netflix catalog with the remote control .
In addition to entertainment, the Samsung M5 monitor has built-in several more options for work. And here everything is not so smooth, but first things first.
Regular monitor
The Samsung M5 is convenient to use as a regular monitor. It has thin screen bezels and a large diagonal. He confidently stands on a wide stand that does not take up useful space.
The monitor has two HDMI and two USB ports for peripherals. Keyboards and mice can be connected wirelessly via Bluetooth or via a USB dongle directly to the monitor. Of course, you can turn on the movie directly from the flash drive.
Smartphone content streaming works like other Samsung TVs.
- All Android smartphones can send videos from YouTube to the big screen.
- Samsung smartphones can still mirror the screen on TV.
- iPhone mirror screen via AirPlay.
This is a VA panel with high contrast and moderate brightness. Without professional equipment, relying on your own feelings, the monitor can be praised for the quality of the picture, but not by all 100 points. In terms of color reproduction and brightness, there are no problems. As well as there are no highlights that interfere with viewing dark content. There are some minor issues with blur when moving objects smoothly. In this price group, however, it is unlikely that someone will be better with this. The main problem here is more fundamental.
For 479 rubles (Discounted at the time of publication) This is a 27-inch Full-HD monitor. Due to the resolution, the pixel grid is highly visible from a meter distance. And if during normal office work you can still ignore it, like a windshield heating grid in a car, then when watching movies from a short distance, it already becomes harder, because the content is distorted. Sitting further away, you do not notice the pixel grid, and you can even enjoy viewing on the big screen.
When connected to a PC via a cable, only the basic picture settings can be adjusted in the monitor. There is a special game mode, which, judging by the description, reduces input lag. But this effect was not felt. In addition, there is a separate mode for widescreen gaming – it automatically switches the monitor to a 21:9 aspect ratio.
Connect your PC wirelessly
Windows 11 allows you to connect to your monitor wirelessly in all desktop modes. However, the maximum screen refresh rate will be 30 Hz, which is not at all suitable for work.
With the Samsung EasyConnection app, you can mirror your PC screen wirelessly. As a result, you get low quality, low speed and a very large input lag. It’s funny that the mouse and keyboard connected to the monitor still work on the PC.
Samsung’s signature Dex feature left about the same impression: slow and uncomfortable. You connect your Samsung smartphone as a docking station, and then you can use applications from your smartphone on the big screen: instant messengers, spreadsheets, documents, photos, etc. The usual fast pace of work in this scenario cannot be achieved.
Monitor as a TV
The monitor is equipped with a Tizen system from Samsung TVs. Settings, menus, icons and the app store are exactly the same. Popular online movie theaters are available, including Netflix and Kinopoisk. You can’t install your own movie-watching apps like on Android, but there are ways to do it through Tizen Studio. When you launch online movie theaters, toggles for improving contrast appear in the settings. So to some extent, the monitor can be customized for yourself and for the content you are viewing.
The native sound from the speakers is quite loud. Their presence in this Samsung monitor is not a quality claim, but rather a tick that they exist at all. If desired, you can connect Bluetooth headphones. But in general, the sound of native speakers was enough.
Complete remote control one to one as in Samsung TVs. Minimalistic, plastic and with voice search that does not support Russian. But the very fact of its presence is important. Indeed, for a scenario with watching a movie on the couch, it is an indispensable accessory.
Competitors
Thanks to built-in online cinemas and YouTube, this monitor enters the field of competition with conventional TVs, where Samsung models start from 882 rubles, LG – from 589 rubles, and Xiaomi – from 585 rubles.

Next is the question of the desired diagonal, because the TVs in this group are mostly only 24 and 32 inches, and the Samsung M5 with a 27-inch panel occupies an advantageous position between them. This is partly where brand strength comes into play. Judging by our online chat in the Catalog with a selection consultation (in any section on the web version of the Catalog), the Samsung brand has a lot of fans, including on TVs.
Work on the monitor without a computer
One of the strong advertising features of Samsung smart monitors is the ability to work without a computer. You can edit a document, presentation or tablet immediately on the monitor, with a keyboard and mouse connected. How it works?
The pretty PC on Screen menu has a link to Microsoft 365, the online version of office apps. The idea is great. We didn’t have time to finish something, the computer is busy or urgent changes need to be made – here you are, everything is on the monitor. But the implementation sucked.
The built-in Microsoft 365 service actually turned out to be a web version of the “office” that runs in a slow and outdated Samsung proprietary browser. You can work, but very slowly, with glitches and noticeable input lag.
Can I have another service? No. The popular Google Docs service writes that the browser is no longer supported, and it is recommended to install the latest one. Even manually updating the monitor software to the latest version did not help.
Another piece of tar is added by the Tizen system itself, where it is impossible to download a normal browser (officially it is exactly like that, but it was not possible to find ways in another way). Processing the picture, for example, cropping or changing the format, will also fail, because there is no application, and everything is buggy in the browser.
Otherwise, it would be an interesting idea to use the monitor as a stand-alone PC remotely or in the office. If you still have a keyboard that can switch between multiple devices, then generally beauty.
Conclusion
The Samsung M5 is good as a monitor if you can get used to the stretched Full-HD resolution pixel grid on a 27-inch panel. It has two HDMI connectors and two USB connectors that even read audio and video from flash drives. To work with graphics, it is better to look for other options, but for office work and just for social networks, it will be just right. And now it is literally one of the most inexpensive 27-inch monitors in the Catalog.
The Samsung M5 is also good as a TV for its price. Yes, there is no tuner. But if you are an experienced user of Netflix or Kinopoisk, then this will not be a problem for you. Even if your flag is “Jolly Roger”, you can find ways, for example, through Tizen Studio. As a TV, the Samsung M5 is also suitable for the kitchen according to the same principles. At least it makes sense to consider it thanks to 27 inches against the background of 24- and 32-inch competitors and thanks to a nimble proprietary system. The dual purpose of the monitor is well manifested here: lying on the couch with the remote control to flip through films, and then work at the table in front of the same screen.
I was very disappointed with the functions of working on a monitor without a PC with a very interesting and great potential. In reality, it was impossible to use Microsoft 365 and other services due to the slow and inconvenient browser on which they were launched.
