The photograph shows the Soviet portable TV set Elektronika-Micro, 1975 year.
Soviet fans show this photo in social networks as an example of “breakthrough Soviet technologies”. Moreover, “Electronics-Micro” did not go on sale, but on the poster – a prototype, or just a concept.
Well, let’s find out who are the pioneers in this direction.
The first portable TV was created by Sony back in 1959.
Pictured is TV8-301 .
And here is a more compact model TV5-303, 1962.
The February 1966 edition of Popular Mechanics advertises a two-sided color television. Magazine editor Larry Steckler claimed to have seen the finished sample – he describes a device with two screens, one color and the other black and white, both 6 inches diagonally. There is no other evidence for the existence of this device.
In 1966, a Motorola engineer began developing the pocket television. Unfortunately, the engineer passed away before he could convince his employer of the market potential of his invention. Beautifully illustrated article (500 kB) from daily newspaper “Columbus Dispatch” describes preliminary studies and possible uses for the apparatus.
In 1966, an article was published about the pocket TV Sinclair Microvision . The size of the prototype is only 10*6.5*5 centimeters.
In 1967, another concept was proposed by Sinclair – MICROVISION II POCKET TV .
But Sinclair did not go on sale until 1977. As many as 10 years it took Clive Sinclair to realize his concept.
Pictured is Sinclair MTV1 .
In 1971, Panasonic launched the National Panasonic TR-001 Pocket TV into mass production.
Side view.
Panasonic TR-001 with dimensions of 60x110x190 and weight of 0.82 kg was already much more compact than the Micra prototype.
The first Soviet portable TV that went on sale is Elektronika VL-100 , 1969.
Dimensions: 145×170×200.
Weight 2.8 kg.
For comparison.
Dimensions Sony TV8-301 (1960): 203x178x229.
Weight: 5.9 kg.
Dimensions Sony TV5-303 M (1964): 195x110x186.
Weight: 3.7 kg.
Sony MicroTV 4-203UW, 1964. Dimensions: 216x79x165. Weight: 2.35 kg.
Sony TV-400V Micro TV, 1965.
Similar to the “Electronics Micra” compact TV – the same age – appeared in the USSR only in 1989.
Already after the collapse of the USSR, the Minsk plant “Caliber” produced a black-and-white TV Mara 2.
Thus, the USSR was not an innovator in the field of portable TVs . Most likely, the concept of VL-100 Electronics was borrowed from Sony TV8-301. Soviet Electronics often copied the products of Japanese companies: Casio, Nintendo, Soni, Panasonic, Sharp and others. The size of the TV was only 87 x 198 x 33 mm.
The USSR could no longer copy such a device – ultra-compact ultra-flat CRTs with a side gun and trapezoidal beam deflection were too tough for the surrogate Soviet electronic industry.

It may be portable, but you call the portable VL-100 in the article, and the Emerson Model 1232 is similar in size.

Sony announced that no later than March 2010 will start production of new OLED-panels of medium and large diagonals. Most likely, new panels will be used in TVs, although it is possible that in laptops and computer monitors. In 2007, the company released the world’s first LED TV and is unlikely to give way to its competitors in this market, which are already preparing to produce such devices with might and main.
The other day, Sony unexpectedly announced that between April 2009 and March 2010 it will start producing large and medium-sized OLED panels.
In 2007, Sony announced the world’s first 11-inch SonyDrive XEL-1 LED TV, which was sold in a limited edition of 2,000 pieces for almost $2,000 apiece. Although the company admitted that the release of each such TV brings losses, it was not discontinued.
According to experts, over time, light-emitting diode (OLED) technology will replace both liquid crystals and plasma, since it has significantly fewer drawbacks in comparison with them. LED panels are thinner, lighter and more economical than their counterparts, plus they display more color shades. Following the SonyDrive XEL-1, other companies now and then began to announce their plans for the release of OLED TVs.
Most notable of all were the plans of Samsung, which announced that in 2009will launch its first LED TV, and in 2010 will add a 42-inch model to the lineup. In April, two companies LG and Panasonic announced their intention to enter the market of such TVs at once. Looking at competitors, Japanese Toshiba also announced similar plans, but, having made the appropriate calculations, it realized that such production would not “suffice” in the next 2.5 years.
Sony already has 11-inch OLED TVs, but new ones will be bigger and better
How Big Data and Video Acoustics Help Increase Production Efficiency
Digitalization
While the market was in full swing, there was no word from Sony. However, these days the situation has changed. Speaking at the 2008 Society for Information Display in Los Angeles, Sony TV Business Representative Yoshito Shiraishi stated that during fiscal year 2009 (April 2009)March 2010), the company will start production of new OLED panels, the diagonals of which will be larger than those of the panels that are currently being produced. Siriasi said the company intends to invest 22 billion yen (about $213 million) in the production of OLED panels of medium and large diagonals in the second half of 2008, according to DigiTimes.
According to Woo-Jong Lee, vice president of Samsung SDI , LED displays are currently mainly used in portable devices; since 20092010 similar technology will be used in laptops and computer monitors. It is likely that the new Sony panels will still be used in TVs this is what most foreign sources indicate. Moreover, in April at the Display 2008 exhibition in Japan, the company already managed to “light up” with its 27-inch OLED TV panel.
The first Sony television was released in 1960. It included 23 transistors and 19 diodes. Two years later, Sony released the world’s smallest monochrome TV. The current generation of people are primarily familiar with Sony TV brands such as Wega and Bravia. The company launched Wega TVs in 2002, and in 2005 launched the first TV under the Bravia brand, which led the company to become the #1 selling LCD TV worldwide a year later.
