How to install a column washer and dryer

Our guide provides step-by-step advice on how to install a front loading tumble dryer and washer in a column.

1. Select a washer and dryer suitable for stacking

First make sure your appliances can be stacked. If you are unsure, refer to the operating instructions. To be placed in a column, the instruments must have the same width and depth.

Pro tip: All Bosch washers and dryers are suitable for stacking. Want to be 100% sure? Choose your washer and dryer from the same series.

2. Calculate the required space

How much space do you need? Look at the dimensions of your washer and dryer. Consider the height of the washer and dryer as well as the connecting element.

Standard 60 cm wide washers and dryers are typically 85 cm high.
Both machines will take up approximately 0.6 cubic meters of space.
Leave an additional 50 mm to 80 mm on each side for cables, ventilation and for cooling appliances.

3. What you need to install a washer and dryer in a column

spirit level;
connector;
anti-slip pads;
special drill;
screwdriver;
reliable assistant;
fixing strap (optional).

It’s time to collect the tools. Here is a list of what you will need to install the washer-dryer column:

4. Level the washer

To prevent the column from tilting, make sure the washer is level before placing the dryer on it. Here’s how to do it: Place a spirit level on top of the washing machine. If the bubble is exactly between the two lines, the washing machine is level. If the bubble moves to one side, that side is higher. Raise the opposite foot to level the appliance.

Pro tip: If your washing machine is on a hard surface such as concrete or tiles, use the rubber pads to absorb vibrations and reduce noise. In addition, such nozzles on the legs of the washing machine prevent it from moving.

5. Use the connector

It will greatly facilitate the installation of the instruments in the column. It usually consists of a frame and fixing parts such as bolts. The frame creates a small gap between the appliances, distributing the dryer’s weight and absorbing vibrations.

6. Stick on the anti-slip pads

After leveling the washing machine, stick on the anti-slip pads before attaching the connector. Compare them with the size of the legs of the dryer. Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Apply one pad to each top corner of your washing machine.

7. Place the dryer on top of the washer

Remember: Place the dryer on top of the washer, never the other way around! This should only be done by an experienced qualified person. At least two people are needed to lift the instrument.

Tumble dryers are very heavy and must be lifted very carefully. It is necessary to sit down, lift the dryer by the bottom and put it on top of the washing machine.

Pro tip: Get everything ready and have a local service technician lift the unit.

How much does the tumble dryer weigh?

Clothes dryer weighs between 45 kg and 60 kg depending on size, model and type. Make sure that the dryer is lifted by at least two people.
