Many would agree that you can improve the sound of your audio system by

or acoustics) with equipment of a higher class. But the fact that the sound quality can be easily improved by simply placing the speakers on a special stand is completely undeservedly overlooked.

How to achieve the perfect sound of the speaker system (AC) of a home theater or, for example, a music center? This is not an easy task. As they say, “with many unknowns.” The result here will depend not only on the quality of the speakers and other components of the system, but also on the racks or shelves on which the speakers are installed. The safety of speakers, their durability is also largely determined by the features of these products. Meanwhile, the owners of the apartment, when purchasing furniture for installing and storing various electronics (the so-called AV furniture), often forget about speaker stands (speaker stand) – stands for acoustics. In this article, we will talk about the varieties of such structures and how to choose them correctly.

Among the various types of AV furniture, racks and speaker brackets share a common functional purpose. They, firstly, allow you to place the speakers in the room so that the sound is optimal. Secondly, these devices serve to isolate the equipment from unwanted vibrations, which are often the cause of sound distortion. Thirdly, AV furniture must be stable and durable in order to ensure the safety of the equipment installed on it (especially considering that many high-end loudspeakers are distinguished not only by a high price, but also by a large mass of tens of kilograms). Finally, the representative properties of such stands, their beautiful appearance, are also important for a living space.

As a rule, speaker stands are used for speakers of the so-called shelf type (from the English bookshelf – “bookshelf”), which are inferior in weight and dimensions to floor-standing speakers. The latter are placed directly on the floor (hence their name). However, for these loudspeakers there are also peculiar stands – acoustic decouplings, which we will talk about later.

Two platforms, four pipes – a simple and reliable design

Racks for speakers are usually made in the form of a column made of a metal profile or a pipe, equipped with a support platform at the bottom and a loudspeaker stand at the top. Typical representatives of such speaker stands are SE10 (ATACAMA AUDIO, UK), BS70 (SPECTRAL, Germany), RP42 S (EMPIRE, Malaysia), SL-7 (SOLIDSTEEL, Italy). The diameter and shape of the section of the pipe are very different, as well as the material from which it is made. The most commonly used pipes are round or rectangular; there may be not one, but two or three (such racks are used, for example, in home theaters to place the speakers of the center channel). Along with metal, chipboard and MDF are also used in the production of coasters. Stands made of chipboard and MDF dampen (quench) all parasitic vibrations well, but, as a rule, they are inferior to backfill metal products (their device will be discussed later) in terms of weight and strength.

All the subtleties of sound

Why, when installing speakers in a room, should the position of high-frequency radiators (tweeters) relative to the listener be taken into account in the first place? The fact is that such radiation is characterized by the greatest directivity. The axis of the loudspeaker should be directed strictly at the person in order to achieve the highest possible sound quality. Otherwise, it becomes muffled. Hence the requirements for the placement of the front speakers. Rear speakers located above head level are often turned in the direction of the listener for the same reason. But the change in the direction of the emission axis affects the perception of bass signals much less. Therefore, subwoofers can be installed to the right, left, front, rear of the listeners.

The most important characteristic of any speaker stand is the height of the speakers above the floor. For a pair of front-facing home theater or stereo speakers intended for listening to audio recordings, there is a rule according to which the high-frequency speakers of the speakers (the so-called tweeters) must be located in the same horizontal plane as the hearing organs of a person sitting in front of the speakers. These requirements can sometimes conflict with each other – for example, if the speakers are quite compact, and the ceilings in the room are low. In addition, some acoustics manufacturers (though not all) give their own recommendations regarding the height of their speakers, so when buying speakers, you should ask the sellers about this. The most correct way is to set the speakers in height, based on the results of listening at home and independently evaluating the quality of the sound received. Rear speakers in a home theater (“rear”) are usually located 30-50 cm above the listening plane, which makes it easy to achieve surround sound.

The weight of the rack is also important. Heavy furniture dampens vibrations better. In addition, she is less likely to tip over with an accidental push. This is especially important in homes with children or animals. In any case, it is advisable to use ATACAMA AUDIO

In order for speaker stands to work effectively in conjunction with speakers (in the sense of increasing the total mass), many acoustic manufacturers advise fastening them together using self-adhesive gaskets or even bolts and screws. However, in the store, the racks are usually not filled with sand and can be quite light and “ringing”. Outwardly, “ordinary” and backfill racks are no different from each other, so ask what type of construction this or that model belongs to. Please note through which channels you can fill the ballast, whether there are decorative caps for closing the channels.

Another sign of a stable structure is a massive and (or) wide base, equipped with spiked supports, which are maximally spaced apart. The further the support spikes are taken out from under the carrier pipe, the more stable the resulting structure will be.

Another important parameter for choosing a rack is its load-bearing capacity. This characteristic must be taken into account when buying AV furniture, otherwise a too massive column can simply crush a flimsy stand. When evaluating the bearing capacity of the racks, of course, you need to know the mass of the loudspeakers, so you can select speaker stands only for existing speakers.

Extra wires – get off the floor!

From an aesthetic point of view, the advantage of such structures, where hollow pipes or steel profiles are used as racks, is the possibility of concealed cable routing. This option is not available on all models. It, in general, does not improve the sound quality, but such products look good. It is advisable to use hidden cable routing so that it does not get in the way under your feet and there is less chance of accidentally damaging it. Since the installation of channels for hidden cable wiring is associated with significant difficulties (a large amount of repair work will be required), it is best to make an acoustic calculation of the room and clarify exactly where the loudspeakers will be located even before the repair begins.

Backfilling rack cavities with sand or shot is not the only way to render AV furniture “acoustically dead”. To reduce parasitic vibrations, for example, damping elastic silicone gaskets are used. They play the role of acoustic decoupling, damping vibrations in the design of the rack.

Another method to reduce vibration is to install the speaker stand on steel spikes. Such a simple and effective design is usually used in combination with metal support holes, which are necessary in order not to spoil the floor covering. Spikes are also used to align the rack with respect to a horizontal surface. To do this, they are equipped with a thread and a lock nut, which allows you to adjust the amount of their extension, depending on the unevenness of the floor.

A special kind of acoustic interchanges are vibration-isolating platforms mounted on cone-shaped spikes – the so-called Mann tables. They are used in cases where the height of the speakers is sufficient so that it does not have to be adjusted by artificially raising the equipment above the floor level. Racks similar in design to shelves for shelf speakers are rarely used for floorstanding speakers.

Interesting systems of insulating supports are offered by SOLID TECH (Sweden). The acoustics placed on them turns out to be hung out on several rubber rings (Feet Of Silence model) or springs (Disc Of Silence). This design eliminates the negative impact of vibrations transmitted both from the outside and from the equipment itself.

Properly selected stands can greatly enhance the sound of your speakers. For example, “Space Harmonizers” (ERAUDIO, Russia) operate on a principle similar to that of a violin soundboard. According to the producers, the sound becomes more articulate and clear, and the timbre of instruments and voice becomes natural.

Massive slabs, for example, made of natural or artificial stone, are also used as acoustic decoupling. They help to reduce unwanted resonance on a “weak” floor subject to vibrations.

Chasing the calm

Getting rid of unwanted vibrations is quite difficult. Some lovers of high-quality sound for the sake of this resort to extraordinary measures. For example, in Japan, a rather interesting method has become widespread: speakers … are hung on chains from the ceiling, which looks intimidating (Pushkin’s lines immediately come to mind: “In that hole, in the sad darkness, a crystal coffin sways . ..”). However, said acoustic decoupling “works” very efficiently. In addition, Japanese specialists thus solve another very urgent problem for them – such a “stand” is not afraid of tremors.

using special brackets BARKAN (Israel) or VOGEL’S (Netherlands), they are unlikely to cost more than a few tens of dollars. Of course, wall or ceiling mounting also has disadvantages, the most obvious of which is that acoustics can no longer be simply moved from place to place.

When choosing speaker brackets, consider the following. First, the bearing capacity of the structure must match the mass of the speakers. Secondly, it is desirable that the board to which the acoustics is attached has two angular degrees of freedom – so you can turn the audio system in a convenient direction. Finally, thirdly, speaker owners should pay attention to the correct ratio of the fastener design in the brackets and loudspeaker enclosures so that the speakers can be securely fixed to the support. That is why, in many cases, brackets and mounts are included with the speakers.

The appearance of stands for acoustics is of little concern to an uncompromising audiophile. But, as statistics show, 80% of the time sound-reproducing equipment is turned off. Therefore, for ordinary owners, the appearance of coasters can be very important. For decorative finishes, some models use veneer of various types of wood, glass, natural and artificial stone and other materials. Thus, in the Tritop model (LIKO DESIGN, Germany), a backlit polished aluminum structure is installed on a massive stand made of natural labradorite. The Theta counter (SCHROERS SCHROERS, Germany) is entirely made of tempered glass. The handmade Soundations models (DESIGNS UNLIMITED, South Africa) use aluminum, solid MDF, exotic wood veneer, and high-quality lacquer used for finishing musical instruments. Some companies make racks from solid wood (for example, UNISOUND, USA).

These coasters look quite presentable. However, such elite audio furniture will cost a lot for buyers (from $400-500 to $2000-3000 per set). The average cost of racks of other companies is noticeably lower. It averages from $50-100 to several hundred dollars. The price depends on the materials used in the decoration, and on the country of manufacture.

As already mentioned, quartz sand or lead shot is used for backfilling in racks. The aggregate must be clean, so the river is elegant high-tech
(SOLIDSTEEL) sand must be screened and calcined. If you don’t feel like doing it yourself, clean sand can be purchased at a pet store, and shot at a hunter’s store.

But the degree of filling of the racks plays a more important role. Usually it is established empirically. It is believed that the best result is backfilling the cavity by 2/3 of its volume. There are other options when the pipe is filled alternately with layers of sand and shot. The positive effect of such experiments is not obvious, but it is quite possible to try to improve the sound of the speakers in this way.

Finally, I would like to say a few words about the proper care of speaker stands. Polished surfaces look good only when they are regularly cleaned of dust and dirt. It is quite problematic to deal with stains on glass shelves – traces still remain there. Therefore, it is better to use special formulations, such as Spectral spray proprietary aerosol, designed to care for glass and screens of plasma and LCD TVs. As for veneer or MDF, normal furniture cleaners will do.

If the TV is standing

It is not recommended to install acoustics and reading devices on a common stand – vibrations reduce the quality of the devices. Speaker stands are designed for speakers of the so-called shelf type (floor speakers do not need stands). The design consists of pipes of round or rectangular cross section. For CD, DVD, VHS manufacturers produce special furniture with miniature slot holders or box-sized sections for one media or another. The main task of such items is to provide orderly storage and access to each specific disk or cassette (their roots are always clearly visible).

The three most common types of structures are racks, wall shelves and hanging racks. In addition, you can place the discs inside a modular furniture system, which includes the corresponding section, or simply in a dresser drawer.
