Traveling around the world

Cote d’Azur is called one of the most expensive resorts in the world. But if you plan your trip correctly, you can relax on the coast at the price of a ticket to Turkey.

I spent two weeks on the Cote d’Azur. During this time, I traveled to Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez and Toulon and small pretty towns on the coast, such as Antibes. They are only gaining popularity among tourists, so the prices there are moderate. The apartment cost 45 €⁣ ( 3240 R) per day, and food cost 13 €⁣ ( 936 P) per day. Moving between cities is also fast and inexpensive.

⛅ Weather

The season starts in May, but the water warms up to +21°C only to mid June. It is hot on the coast in summer: even in the shade, the temperature can reach +30 °C. It is better to walk around the cities in the morning or in the evening, when the sun hides behind houses that are close to each other.

September is the velvet season: there are fewer tourists, and the weather allows you to swim and sunbathe. The average air temperature during the day is +24 °C, water +20 °C. The season ends in October.

Winter on the coast averages +14°C, spring +18°C.

✈️ How to get there

In the high season, a direct round-trip flight will cost about 28,000 RUR. It is cheaper to get from Moscow to Nice with a transfer. For 15,000 R you can fly with a transfer in Munich, Helsinki or Zurich.

From the airport to the center of Nice can be reached on foot in an hour along the Promenade des Anglais or by buses No. 500 and 23 for 1.5 €⁣ (108 R). There is a map and location of stops on the official website of the airport.

From Paris to Nice six hours by train, the ticket costs 70-130 €⁣ (5040 – 9360 R). A ride on the Flixbus bus will cost 1500-3000 R, but you will have to spend 15 hours on the way.

🗺 Map

🏙️ Cote d’Azur resorts

You can travel along the coast for several months in a row. I will tell you about several cities that I remember the most.

Nice cannot be seen in one day. I want to stay in the city for a week, even if there are no clear plans: just walk the streets, the Promenade des Anglais and admire the sea.

The Old Town of Nice looks like Italy with its yellow walls and orange roofs. It is crowded and atmospheric: if you take away all the trendy cafes, the area looks like a medieval one.

View of the Promenade des Anglais and the airport from Castle Hill. The beaches in Nice are pebbly – you don’t have to clean things from sand. From the wide modern avenue in Nice, you can turn onto a small narrow street as if from another city. The composition with figures on lampposts is called “Dialogue in Nice” and symbolizes the seven continents. It seemed to me that they did not fit into the style of the old square. It is better to come there in the evening: the composition looks better in the dark

Eight kilometers from the center of Nice, at an altitude of 370 meters, there is an observatory. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour in English. They are held on Wednesday and Saturday from 14:30. Tour guides enthusiastically talk about the stars, the sky and their own research. I am not fond of astronomy, but even I was interested.

If you don’t speak English, I still advise you to go to the observatory. From the territory of the observation deck, you can see the famous curved coast of Nice, which resembles a sickle.

A ticket to the observatory costs 6 €⁣ (432 R), they are sold on the spot or on the official website. Bus number 84 goes there from the city center, the fare will cost 1.5 €⁣ (108 R).

Another viewpoint in Nice is located on Castle Hill. From there you have a good view of the embankment and the city as a whole. To get to the site, you need to go along the English Embankment towards the port. On a hot day, the climb can seem endless, so it’s best to use the free elevator.

The stairs to the Castle Hill are not high, but it is difficult to climb in hot weather. In the lower left corner of the photo, you can see the door that leads to the free elevator

Cannes. During the day, this is an ordinary tourist town, where tourists in shorts or swimsuits lazily walk around. But in the evening the city changes. On Croisette, you can catch the aroma of expensive selective perfumes, and parties on yachts are held on the embankment.

There are few attractions in Cannes: an observation deck, a castle and a port with yachts, which everyone enters like a museum. Another famous place in the city is the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the Cannes Film Festival takes place every year. If no event is planned in the near future, the building looks ordinary. But you can still go there: look at the hall where the awards are presented and wander along the corridors. The ticket costs 6 €⁣ (432 R) and is sold on the website of the palace.

You can look down on the city from the observation deck next to the Church of Our Lady of Good Hope, which was built in the 17th century. I went up on foot and did not regret it: I saw deserted streets and atmospheric lanes.

In general, it seemed to me that a day was enough for Cannes. Then it is better to find a hotel in a more accessible and less noisy city.

If I had not been looking for the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes on purpose, I would have passed by this building without even paying attention to it

Antibes is a cozy little town between Nice and Cannes. If you walk around the old center in the evening, it may seem that there are no people in the city. But in fact, everyone, from young people to companies of stylish grandparents, sit in bars and restaurants.

In Antibes, the ancient Carré Fort, where Napoleon was imprisoned in his youth, has been preserved. The fort was built in the shape of a four-pointed star and is located in a park area. From the top you have a view of the city and the sea. You can go inside only as part of an excursion, a ticket costs 3 €⁣ (215 R) and is sold on the spot. Even if you do not want to enter the fort, I advise you to wander around its powerful walls: Carré looks impressive.

Another popular attraction in Antibes is the Pablo Picasso Museum. It is located in the building where the artist lived and painted for several months. That period of creativity was short, but fruitful for Picasso. The artist donated many works to the city, and they laid the foundation for the museum. Entrance costs 6 €⁣ (432 R), tickets are sold on the spot.

During the season, it is better to walk along the streets of Cannes in the evening: it is too hot there during the day. In the fifties, blue wooden chairs were placed on the embankment of Nice, which became the symbol of the city. Now they can be seen in Cannes

Saint-Tropez has pine trees, different beaches, and a promenade with yellow buildings. When looking at the photos, it seems to me that I have visited at least three different places.

Most people come to Saint-Tropez to stay up late and wake up late. This is a city of fun, parties and noisy bars, which became popular after the release of the film “And God Created Woman” with Brigitte Bardot.

In Saint Tropez, you can see and photograph the 18th century church of Eglise Notre Dame de l’Assomption. Its yellow-pink bell tower is featured on most of the postcards in Saint-Tropez souvenir shops. The church stands out in size against the background of small and low houses, but it seemed to me that in the photographs it looks better than in reality.

In October, the famous Porsche parade takes place in the city. On it you can see rare models of cars driven by stylish European grandparents. The festival dates are listed on the official website.

Port Grimaud was built in the 1960s. Land on the swamps was not of interest to developers, but one ambitious French architect found a way out and designed a city on the water. Twenty small islands, fourteen bridges and private boats near each house – this is the whole of Grimaud. You can only get around here on foot or by boat along the canals, which is why the city is called the French Venice.

Some yachts in Port Grimaud seem larger than at home. Source: Olesya Kuznetsova / shutterstock.com

Toulon is located 150 kilometers from Nice, almost at the very end of the western part of the Côte d’Azur. The navy is based there, so sometimes you can see not only yachts, but also harsh warships. By French standards, this is a large city.

Toulon seemed unpredictable to me. There are many small streets and alleys in the old center, and each time I did not know what would be around the corner. Sometimes a small and unremarkable street ran into a beautiful square with a fountain and restaurants.

Toulon is located between the forest and the azure sea. You can look at the city from above from Mount Faron, 584 meters high. The site can be reached from the center by bus number 40 or funicular, which is located one and a half kilometers from the railway station. A ticket for the funicular in both directions will cost 12 €⁣ (864 R).

In the city center the beaches are small and crowded. For the sea and sand, it is worth going to Murion, a district in the east of the city. There are beautiful beaches and many fish restaurants.

Back in Toulon, I was impressed by the Royal Tower, a round fort built in the 16th century. Going up there, it seems that I got to the Fort Boyard game and Passepartout is walking somewhere nearby. From the walls of the tower you can see the sea and the bay.

Entrance to the tower costs 2 €⁣ (144 R). Sometimes there are parties and concerts. The schedule can be found on the city’s website.

🏖️ Beaches

There are many different beaches in every town and village: rocky, pebbly, sandy, paid and free. Everywhere is clear, azure water and an incredible view of the Mediterranean Sea.

Spending a day on the territory of a private beach in the center of Nice costs 20 €⁣ (1440 R). In tourist cities, you can rent a sun lounger for 6 €⁣ (432 R). The distance between them is twenty centimeters, and there are hundreds of people on the beach. It’s hard for me to imagine that you can have a good rest in such an environment, so I always went only to free beaches. They almost always have showers and changing cabins.

Private paid areas on many beaches alternate with free areas

Karras Beach with a length of 5 km is located near the center of Nice. In the free part of the beach, you can sunbathe on your towel. There is also a volleyball field there. There are a lot of people, but I still felt comfortable relaxing there.

The entire beach is pebbly – it is better to swim in special swimming slippers. The sea is immediately deep, the water is clean and refreshing.

The beach along the Croisette in Cannes is almost all paid. But at the beginning and end of the embankment there are places for those who just want to lie on their towel.

Sandy beach, cool water. I liked this beach more in the evening at sunset, when the sun falls below the horizon and illuminates the coast with orange light.

Sunset on the Croisette is not divided into paid and free

The beach of Juan-les-Pins is cozy and calm, although it is a 20-minute drive from Cannes. The proximity of one of the most expensive cities in the world is only reminded by the yachts seen on the horizon.

The town is small, and there is nothing special except a sandy and clean beach. On weekdays it is comfortable and not crowded, but in the evening it is noisy on the beach: young people arrange parties on the coast.

On Pampelonne beach, south of Saint-Tropez, soft fine sand and warm clear sea. But you won’t be able to retire there: people go to Pampelonne for parties and meetings. Nudists have chosen some places, and cafes and restaurants are expensive there. I don’t like bars and noisy places, so the beach was interesting to me only during the day.

Billionaires Bay Beach is small and picturesque, surrounded by rocks and trees. The water is clear and refreshing, and the shore and bottom are rocky. It is better to come to the beach in the morning to enjoy the tranquility.

A man wearing an iron mask was held on Sainte-Marguerite . You can go to the local beaches for the whole day: walk along the cedar alleys and visit the beaches in different parts of the island. The coastline is rocky, in some places the water washed out beautiful caves in the rocks. You can also look at yachts from the island: there are more of them in the sea than seagulls in the sky.

There is a ferry from Cannes to the island, the journey takes 15-20 minutes. A ticket costs 14 €⁣ (1008 R) in both directions. It can be purchased in advance on the carrier’s website.

💸 Money

France’s currency is the euro. In restaurants and shops, you can pay by card. If you want to leave a tip, tell the waiter the amount and he will add it to the bill. To buy coffee at a beach cafe or a souvenir, it is better to have cash with you.

🚌 Transport

Trains. Trains and electric trains run along the Cote d’Azur. There are train stations in Nice, Cannes, Toulon and Antibes. The best prices are for the TER regional train. On it from Nice to Toulon – an hour and a half on the way, a ticket costs an average of 15 €⁣ (1080 R). From Nice to Menton, a city on the border with Italy, is only 40 minutes. The fare will cost an average of 5 €⁣ (360 R).

Tickets are sold at the station ticket offices, vending machines or on the official website of the French Railways. Cheaper train tickets can be bought on the Vigo website. For example, a ticket from Nice to Toulon is on average 30% cheaper and costs 10 €⁣ (720 R). Payment is accepted only from EU bank cards. European friends helped me buy a ticket.

Bus. Small distances between cities are best covered by buses. For example, from Nice to Cannes you can take bus number 200 for 1.5 €⁣ (108 R). He stops in various cities, including Juan-les-Pins and Antibes. Tickets are sold by the driver. Travel time is an hour and a half, if there are no traffic jams.

In cities, I always walk, but you can also get around by city bus. Usually a ticket costs 1.5-2 € (110-146 R).

Car rental. On the Côte d’Azur there are standard distributors like Hertz and Budget. I usually check cars on Kayak, Auto Europe, or Rentalcars websites.

Booking a car in summer is expensive: an economy class car will cost 90–100 €⁣ (6480–7200 R) per day. If you book in advance, you can find a car for 20–30 €⁣ (1440–2160 R). Picking up a car at city offices is usually 20-30% cheaper than at the airport.

🏨 Accommodation

I usually look for hotels or apartments on Booking, Agoda and Airbnb. On the Cote d’Azur, the most options are on Airbnb. Prices are lower if booked in advance. A few days before arrival, there may not be good options.

The cost of apartments and hotels in Nice, Cannes and Saint-Tropez is more expensive than in less popular cities. For example, in Nice a small room in a hotel not on the coastline costs at least 70 €⁣ (5040 R) per day, in Saint-Tropez — 120 €⁣ (8640 R). In Juan-les-Pins, an apartment near the beach will cost 45 €⁣ (3240 R), a hotel in the center of Toulon – 58 €⁣ (4176 R).

🐟 Food

Cafes and restaurants. The busier the street, the more expensive the food. In Cannes, on the central streets of the old town, pasta costs 20 €⁣ (1440 R), a glass of wine – from 5 €⁣ (360 R). In less touristy cities like Antibes, prices are 5-10% lower.

To save money, you can order takeaway food. I like to buy hot pizza only from the oven, drinks in the supermarket and eat in the park. Such a lunch costs a maximum of 13 €⁣ (936 R).
