What Is a Dual Fuel Range

Dual fuel ranges bring together a gas stovetop and electric oven, capitalizing on the benefits of both. You may have thought the gas vs. electric debate stopped at the stovetop, but there are also some key differences in how electric and gas heat perform inside an oven. Most ranges stick with one source of heat, so a dual fuel range can be a worthwhile upgrade depending on how you like to cook. Read on to learn more about these unique ranges and find out if they’re right for you.

What does “dual fuel range” mean?

“Dual fuel” refers to two types of heat in one range: gas heat on the stovetop and electric heat in the oven cavity. Dual fuel ranges are designed for those who want the responsive, hands-on experience of an open flame on the stovetop, but also prefer the dry, even heat of an electric oven. So if you love baking just as much as searing and sauteing, you may want to consider a dual fuel range.

But first, you’ll need to make sure your kitchen is set up with two fuel sources. Most kitchens will have electric power in the form of a wall outlet, but ensure you have a 220/240 rather than a 120 volt outlet. You’ll also need a dedicated gas line, which can always be installed if you don’t already have one. Learn more about gas vs. electric heat.

Why should I consider a dual fuel vs. gas range?

Dual fuel ranges use electric heat in the oven, which tends to be more consistent than gas heat, resulting in evenly cooked finished results. In a gas oven, the flame remains on and off for longer periods of time, so may have more temperature variation. In contrast, heated elements in an electric oven are often designed to cover more area in the cavity and can be cycled more frequently to maintain temperature well, so you won’t need to rotate dishes as often.

Some cooks prefer electric ovens because it creates a drier heat that promotes browning and crisping. On the other hand, more moisture is helpful when cooking meat or any dishes that need to stay juicy, so think about what types of meals you make most often when considering a dual fuel vs. gas range. If you think you might go with gas, browse Whirlpool® Gas Ranges to learn more about what they have to offer. Find out how many BTUs gas ranges need for sufficient cooking power.

What are the pros and cons of dual fuel ranges?

When it comes to dual fuel vs. gas or electric ranges, all are available in freestanding and slide-in models and come with similar features like convection cooking and self-cleaning cycles. However, there are some pros and cons to be aware of before you make a decision.

Advantages of dual fuel ranges

  • Gas cooktops are highly responsive and tend to have easier-to-control heat compared to electric stovetops.
  • Even, consistent heat in the oven means you need to rotate dishes less.
  • Drier heat in the oven promotes crispy, brown results when broilingroasting and baking.
  •

Disadvantages of dual fuel ranges

  • The electric oven may preheat slower than a gas oven.

  • Potentially higher purchase and installation costs. Check the manufacturer’s installation requirements.

  • A dedicated gas line will need to be installed if you don’t already have one.

Are dual fuel ranges worth it?

If you want the best attributes of gas stovetops and electric ovens combined into one appliance, a dual fuel range is worth it. Not only will you get more responsive burners when boiling or sautéing, but the oven’s drier heat is ideal for roasting and baking. That said, if you do not currently have a dedicated gas line, you may want to skip a dual fuel range.

Alternatives to dual fuel stoves

Dual fuel ranges are not the only available option when you want to maximize the versatility of your kitchen appliances. There are multiple alternatives to dual fuel stoves when you want to get the most out of your kitchen routine.

Gas cooktop plus electric wall oven

If you want to take advantage of both gas and electric heat in the kitchen, you can also opt for a gas cooktop and separate wall oven.  Most wall ovens available today use electric heat and can be found in both single, double and microwave wall oven combo models. This may be a good option if you’re looking for more oven capacity. For example, Whirlpool® Wall Ovens feature up to 10 cubic feet of interior space. Standalone cooktops also have advantages like placement flexibility and easy installation on kitchen islands. Explore Whirlpool® Cooktops to learn more.

Induction cooktop

If you’re looking for a cooktop that’s more responsive than a standard electric, but you don’t have a gas hookup, you may want to consider induction cooking. Induction stovetops are a type of electric cooktop that use electromagnetism to heat cookware. Because energy is transferred directly into cookware, induction elements respond to temperature changes quickly, like a gas flame. Learn more about induction cooking or explore a Whirlpool® Induction Cooktop.

Long burning solid fuel stoves

Long-burning solid fuel stoves are widely used for heating private houses located in areas without main gas supply. Such heating systems have a truly colossal efficiency – about 95%. Traditional wood stoves of the simplest design, by comparison, barely reach the modest 60%.

Benefits of long burning solid fuel systems

Let’s note some of the most important advantages that heating devices of this type have:

  1. Economy . Firewood is the most affordable type of fuel in Russia. They are many times cheaper than, say, electricity or diesel.
  2. High performance . Due to certain design features of the long-burning stove, it effectively maintains the set temperature in the room for 8 hours.
  3. No need to constantly maintain the flame in the firebox . It is enough to load firewood several times a day.
  4. Rapid space heating . Long-burning heating systems raise the air temperature to a comfortable level in just 30-40 minutes.
  5. Compact . Such furnaces have modest dimensions and moderate weight. As a rule, for their installation it is not necessary to lay a separate powerful foundation.
  6. Fuel compatibility . Along with traditional firewood, you can use coal, fuel briquettes and pellets (if you have a special pellet burner).
  7. Long life . Furnaces made of high-strength metal alloy will last 10 years.
  8. Easy to install . A solid fuel stove can be installed in almost any room; the chimney at the same time is displayed both through the roof and through the wall.
  9. Environment and fire safety . Modern heating systems are manufactured in accordance with strict requirements and standards, so you can be sure of their quality and reliability.

Another important advantage of long-burning solid fuel stoves for the home is the ergonomic design and stylish design. Such devices will look organic in almost any room, whether it is a spacious bedroom in a country cottage or a small kitchen-dining room in the country.

Design and function

When using a classic solid fuel stove, firewood is placed in the combustion chamber. Just below the latter is a blower door through which oxygen enters, which is necessary to maintain the combustion process. The more air enters the firebox, the faster the firewood is burned. The resulting heat quickly enters the heated room and is partially removed through the chimney. After a short time, it is necessary to put fresh fuel into the furnace, otherwise the temperature in the room will begin to decrease.

Long-burning furnaces have a fundamentally different design. Their inner chamber consists of two compartments: in the first, firewood or coal gradually burns out, and in the second, the pyrolysis gas emitted by the fuel is burned. The supply of oxygen to the first compartment is carried out extremely slowly, in minimal portions, so that the fuel does not burn out almost instantly, but smolders for hours, giving off heat.

It should be noted that in the second case, much less heat enters the room. The long burning mode is more aimed at maintaining a comfortable temperature level.

Instruction manual for long burning furnace

Solid fuel stove with long burning function is used as follows:

  1. If you need to quickly warm up a cold house, load wood or coal into the firebox, light it up and open the blower door.
  2. As soon as the fire starts, a strong heat transfer will begin due to the large amount of oxygen entering the furnace.
  3. The house will warm up completely in 30-40 minutes. After that, the blower damper can be closed, and the stove will go into long-term burning mode.
  4. Load a new batch of firewood or coal into the combustion chamber. Due to the limited access of air, the fuel will not burn, but slowly smolder. In this case, the heat released by the accumulated pyrolysis gas will accumulate in the upper compartment of the furnace, gradually leaving for the heat exchanger or convector.

In this mode, one bookmark of firewood is enough for 6-8 hours of continuous operation – provided, of course, that the room is already warmed up to room temperature, which you just need to maintain.

How to choose a long burning stove

The larger the building that you need to warm up, the more powerful the heating installation should be, and vice versa. Modern manufacturers offer solid fuel stoves for houses ranging from 75 to 250 m 2 .

In order not to make a mistake with the choice, it is necessary to clearly understand what technical characteristics such devices have. We note the most important of them:

  • Autonomy time. Most stoves are capable of heating a room for 6-8 hours on one portion of fuel. There are, however, models in which this figure is reduced to 4-5 hours or increased to 10 hours.
  • Body material. The thicker the walls of the furnace, the slower the heated device will cool, and the longer it will be able to warm the house. Moreover, furnaces made of high-strength steel alloy have a longer service life.
  • Firebox depth. Models with different combustion chamber sizes are available on the market. You can choose a stove that can hold firewood up to 600 mm long.

The list of other characteristics that you should pay attention to when choosing a metal furnace includes its dimensions and weight, as well as the diameter of the chimney. Many appliances are complemented by a panoramic door with heat-resistant glass, which makes the stove a real decoration of the living room. Such devices serve as a fireplace, around which the whole family gathers on cold winter evenings.

Another practical option that will surely come in handy is a cooktop for heating food.

Mounting details

When installing solid fuel stoves for summer cottages and at home with a long burning function, a number of nuances must be taken into account:

  • Do not place the oven in the corner of the room and close to the wall. A sharp temperature contrast in the cold season – from minus on the street to high near the stove – will inevitably provoke the constant formation of condensation on the wall, which can ruin even the highest quality finish in just one season.
  • If the weight of the heating system exceeds 100 kg, a special podium must be installed. It can be a concrete screed or do-it-yourself brickwork.
  • The distance from the stove to flammable surfaces must be at least 1.2 m. If this rule cannot be observed (for example, due to the modest size of the room), sheathe all “dangerous places” with heat-resistant asbestos sheets or install special protective screens.
  • Make the chimney collapsible. The fact is that a lot of soot accumulates in long-burning furnaces, which must be removed in a timely manner. Facilitate this process in advance, even at the stage of installing the heating system.

Carefully follow the recommendations contained in the operating instructions for the heater. As a rule, manufacturers clearly describe both the installation process of the furnace and the features of its operation.

Solid fuel stoves for cottages and houses “Teplodar”

The company’s catalog contains a wide selection of heating systems with a long burning function. Detailed descriptions and colorful photos presented in the product cards will allow you to easily choose a stove that fully meets your needs and budget for the purchase.

We offer you a closer look at two series of heating systems with a long burning function from the Teplodar company – Matrix and TOP Model.

Heating stoves from the “Matrix” line are intended for rooms with a volume of 100 and 200 m 3 . Each of the devices is equipped with a convector casing, which provides fast and uniform heating of the house, regardless of the season, and protects those in the room from infrared radiation emanating from the walls of the furnace.

The complex double-turn design of the steel combustion chamber with a two-channel system of afterburners allows the devices to keep burning up to 8 hours on one portion of firewood. A special flame deflector protects the rear wall from overheating. The top panel is used as a cooking surface. In the intensive combustion mode, it heats up to 500 °C.

Due to their compact size and modest weight, Matrix stoves harmoniously fit into any interiors. Additional savings in living space are provided by the in-depth design of the chimney (it can be brought not only up, but also back). Another important aesthetic advantage of the furnaces of this series is the presence of a panoramic door with heat-resistant glass.

Long-burning stoves “TOP-Model” are presented in five functional modifications – with a steel and cast-iron door, for rooms with a volume of 140, 200 and 300 m 3 . All devices from this line are equipped with special convective pipes inside the combustion chamber, in which the air is quickly heated.

Hot streams rise to the holes in the upper part of the furnace and are released into the outer space, quickly and evenly filling the entire volume of the room. For heating adjacent rooms, you can purchase a mounted heat sink.

Stoves with a cast-iron door have an insert made of heat-resistant glass, through which it is so pleasant to watch the flames. The steel door, in turn, has the ability to self-cool and does not pose a risk of burns. Furnaces from the modification “TOP 200” can be supplemented with an attachment for forced convection.

This is the best solution for large cottages with spacious rooms. All solid fuel stoves presented in the TOP-model line are equipped with a hob. All models are equipped with a flame deflector – a special stainless steel plate designed to protect the rear wall from fire.

The long-term burning mode is implemented in such devices due to an effective three-turn sealed combustion chamber. Due to this, a burning time of up to 8 hours is achieved from the moment of fuel filling.

You can get more detailed information about the operation of the Matrix and TOP Model heating systems, as well as get acquainted with other series of stoves, boilers and fireplaces on the Teplodar website.

By contacting us, you will solve the issue of heating a room of any size and purpose within one day. So, from us you can purchase both a powerful boiler with a water circuit for year-round heating and supplying hot water to a large country cottage, and a compact stove with a hob for a summer country house.

Choosing a heating stove for the home

Almost every country or country house today can be found0211 heating stoves – solid fuel boilers used for space heating and cooking. There are several criteria that high-quality heating stoves must meet:

a) Functionality. Good models of fireplaces allow not only to admire the open flame, to heat the room, but also to cook / heat up various dishes on it;
b) Security. A high-quality heating stove must comply with all fire safety standards and regulations, ensuring safe operation and excluding accidental spread of flame;
c) Decorative properties. The fireplace must be in harmony with the interior decoration of the room, otherwise the pleasure of using it will be incomplete.

The products Meta-VneshTrans correspond best to the characteristics described above. This company produces a whole line of models heating stoves , not only for residential premises, but also for steam rooms of saunas and baths. A variety of design, technical characteristics allow you to choose the optimal modification for operation in any conditions found in modern country houses.

Classification of fireplaces and boilers manufactured by Meta-Vnesh-Trans

Solid fuel heating equipment of this company is classified based on the following criteria:

1. Design. There are several options for the execution of heating furnaces, differing in overall dimensions, the shape of the body and the way the chimney is connected – in the upper part of the unit or at the back. The only common thing is the use of heat-resistant glass as the material of the firebox door, which freely passes thermal energy into the room and allows you to observe the process of burning firewood. Functionally, the glass door prevents coal from spilling onto the floor of the room and the spread of open fire outside the combustion chamber;
2. The volume of the furnace compartment. This parameter in various modifications of furnaces has a value of 50 cubic decimeters or more;
3. Effective power. Boilers are produced in various capacities: from six to fourteen kilowatts;
4. Volume of heated premises. This criterion is determined by the power of the heating furnace. The most low-power fireplace model – “Oka” is able to create a comfortable temperature in a room with a volume of up to 60 cubic meters, and the most powerful – “Marseille 14” will cope with heating a room, the volume of which can reach 250 cubic meters.
