Everything old is new again. And the world of tabletop arcade games is no exception. While there may be plenty of new advancements in technology, who doesn’t love the nostalgia of classic arcade games. Thankfully, the best tabletop arcade game is just a purchase away. Finally, your rec room will be complete. While older versions of these games were quite bulky, newer tabletop versions have a smaller footprint and can be placed on a table for more comfort and convenience.
We found five of the best tabletop arcades on the market but one that really stands out is the Doc and Pies Retro Arcade Machine. Based on the classic Donkey Kong game, this version is fun and can be played by yourself or against a friend. It has full size buttons and a joystick, which is perfect for the adult gamers out there. And, weighing just 50 pounds, this is a portable and easy to set up arcade. You can even bring it along to a friend’s house if the need arises.
Along with reviews of all the selected arcade games, we have also put together a buying guide. This is where you can find everything you need to know about the features to consider. Whether it’s how large the arcade is, how many players can use it, or even the screen size, we will have that information for you. There is also a section where we answer the most commonly requested questions about tabletop arcades. Our aim is to provide as much information as you need so you can get back to what life is all about: having fun.
Top 6 Tabletop Arcades Review 2023
The Doc and Pies Retro Arcade Machine is our Editor’s Choice for good reason. While the graphics may make it seem like it’s a Donkey Kong tabletop arcade, it’s actually so much more. That’s because it offers 60 classic arcade games. The games include Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Frogger, Galaga, and more.
The Doc and Pies Retro Arcade Machine is a bit bulky and you will need a dedicated, sturdy table for it to sit on. It also weighs 50 pounds, so while it can be moved, it is not as portable as smaller machines. Still, this is a very versatile tabletop arcade that offers hours upon hours of fun.
The buttons are full size and the joystick is also easy to maneuver. The screen is 19 inches which is perfect for seeing all your subtle moves come to life. It is not coin operated so there is no need to worry about figuring out that option.
As for construction, the Doc and Pies Retro Arcade Machine is sturdily built. You won’t have to worry about it tipping over or breaking. The only downside with the construction is with the joystick. Too many movements and it can start to unscrew itself. This is an easy fix, however, as you simply screw it back in again.
For those wanting a surplus of classic gaming choices, the Doc and Pies Retro Arcade Machine is a sure win.
Why is it special?
- Comes with 60 games
- Large screen
- Easy to set up
What are the flaws?
- Joystick can unscrew over time
Cocktail arcade machines, which include stools to sit around, are much larger than traditional tabletop arcade games and therefore more expensive. The Prime Arcades 1162 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine is our Premium Pick for this reason. You will get the complete gaming experience but it will come at a price.
Included in your purchase is a large gaming console in the shape of a table. The screen is covered by a ¼ inch tempered glass. This is a premium pick, so no plexiglass is used. Also included are two chrome stools.
What’s really nice about the Prime Arcades 1162 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine is that two people can play at this arcade console. One of the major failings of classic tabletop machines is that only one person can play at a time. This cocktail machine is made for socializing and entertaining.
The LED monitor uses the best of modern technology while the games themselves are classic throwbacks. If you’re wondering just what those games are, you’re in for a big surprise. Look at the number in the name of this product. That’s right; there are 1162 games included. We’d love to list them all, but frankly that would be exhausting. You can trust, however, that no matter what classic arcade game you want to play, this machine will have it.
If you’re looking for downsides to the Prime Arcades 1162 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine, there aren’t many. The instructions could be a bit easier to understand, but their customer service is excellent and will gladly help you.
What makes it special?
- Whopping 1162 games included
- Includes 2 chrome stools
- Fine craftsmanship
What cons did we find?
- Instructions could be clearer

When you look at the Prime Arcades 412 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine, you can’t help but be transported back in time. Its premium graphics look great and will immerse you right into the gaming world.
One of the best features of the Prime Arcades 412 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine is that it comes fully assembled. Who wants to spend their free time assembling a complicated machine? Instead, just open the box, find the right place for your new toy, and start playing.
As for downsides, you might want to consider the price. This is a budget-friendly pick given the category, but it will still cost a lot. If you’re planning on spending this amount of money, you might want to pay just a bit more for access to even more games.
What do we love it for?
- Cool graphics
- Comes fully assembled
- Quality construction
What were we disappointed with?
- Still costs a lot but don’t get as many games as other models

Things to Consider
Ready, Player One? Before you commit to a new tabletop arcade and revisit your youth, make sure you know what you are getting into. Tabletop arcades may be smaller than the version you remember, but they still take up a lot of room. Do your research to find the device that will give you the most opportunity for creating an unbeatable high score.
Features to consider when choosing a tabletop arcade machine
Finding the right tabletop arcade can be a bit challenging. There are a lot of factors involved beyond just reconnecting with your favorite childhood game. Below are the most important factors to think about.
Small tabletop cabinet or a cocktail arcade machine?
Within the world of tabletop arcade are different types. A tabletop cabinet, as the name implies, is small enough to be placed on a table or desk. You can then either stand or sit in front of it.
A cocktail arcade machine gets its name from the fact you could technically sit and sip a cocktail while playing. Cocktail arcade machines will have stools included in the purchase to create a more social experience.
How many games are there inside
The amount of tabletop arcade games in one machine will vary greatly. For example, the Arcade1Up Pacman Countercade only has two games while the Doc and Pies Retro Arcade Machine has 60.
Cocktail arcades machines, at which you can sit at, can offer even more game options. Indeed, these often reach into the hundred or even thousands, although you will pay a premium for such a large amount of content.
Screen size
The screen size will vary greatly on tabletop arcades. However, the screen size is usually in proportion to the overall size of the entire arcade. Therefore, if you purchase a larger arcade, the screen will be larger as well.
The smallest screen size on our list of items is for the My Arcade Mini Player which has is only 4. 25 inches in size. As the name suggests, this is a mini version. Its small size makes it perfect for kids who want to keep a game in their room.
At the larger end of the spectrum is the ABVIDEO INC. Cocktail Arcade Machine which has a screen size of 22 inches. Again, the design is much different with this machine as the screen is actually on a table and there are chairs surrounding it.
Design
There are many different designs for tabletop arcades. Some, like the My Arcade Mini Player, are small and perfect for a kid’s desk. Others, like the ABVIDEO INC. Cocktail Arcade Machine and the Prime Arcades 412 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine are meant to mimic a table where you sit on stools around it and look down onto the screen.
If you want a more classic machine that mimics arcade games of the past, check out the Doc and Pies Retro Arcade Machine and the Arcade1Up Pacman Countercade.
If there’s an option of a coin-operated play
When you wanted to head to the arcade as a kid, part of the ritual was scrounging up enough quarters to last you your play time. Purchasing your own tabletop arcade means not having to actually pay per game, but there’s still a nostalgia factor about it. This is why some machines have the option of being coin-operated. The good news is that you will have the key to retrieve your coins when you choose to. As well, there is usually an option to switch to a free play mode instead.
On our list, the ABVIDEO INC. Cocktail Arcade Machine and the Prime Arcades 412 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine, and the Prime Arcades 1162 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine all have a coin-operated option.
Dimensions
The size of a tabletop arcade will vary greatly. At the small end, the My Arcade Mini Player measures just 5.5 x 6.2 x 2.2 inches and can fit on any table or desk. At the large end, the Prime Arcades 1162 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine measures a massive 30 x 44 x 29 inches.
Before you purchase your next tabletop arcade, think about where you will want to place it. Measure both the physical space it will take up and the space you will need to play it. Remember that you will probably have an audience at some point, so leave room around your new game so everyone can see as you defend your high score.
Warranty
Tabletop arcades are complex machinery. From graphics cards to construction, a lot goes into these devices to make them work. Find a product with a solid warranty so you can quickly get back into gaming if any issues arise. On our list, the product with the best warranty is the Prime Arcades 412 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine. It has a five-year warranty along with lifetime tech support.
If a model is coin-operated, can I also set it to an on free play?
One of the nostalgia factors of arcade games was placing a quarter in the slot. Many tabletop arcades for home use have this option, but rest easy as you can also dismantle the coin operation. All machines are different, so be sure to check your user guide. However, setting your new game to free play is easy and usually just requires the press of a button.
Where can I find the list of games for each?
Different tabletop arcades will have different types of games. Some will have only two games available while others will have as many as 2,475. To find out which games are included, it’s best to check the manufacturer’s website for a complete list.
How are such machines powered?
All of the tabletop arcades on our list are powered by electricity. You will need to set up your arcade by an electrical outlet for best results. Most power cords are 8 feet in length and while you can use an extension cord, excess wires can pose a tripping hazard.
Wrapping It Up
Get ready for the ultimate blast from the past. Our Editor’s Choice for the best tabletop arcade is the Doc and Pies Retro Arcade Machine. You can play Donkey Kong and 59 other classic arcade games on this tabletop design. It’s the perfect size for any rec room table.
If you’re wanting an endless amount of choice, the Prime Arcades 1162 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine is the way to go. With 1162 different arcade games to choose from, you can entertain your friends for hours at a time.
If this cocktail-style arcade machine is a bit too pricey, however, there is a more budget-friendly pick with the Prime Arcades 412 Game Cocktail Arcade Machine. It still has 412 prime games to choose from and the table and chairs make for an excellent social setting. Transform your next games night with the best tabletop arcade.
7 arcade games that have already become classics, but still can teach something / Sudo Null IT News a whole generation grew up with them. But what can they teach the modern game designer?
Today on the Internet Game Projects Management blog, in our translation section, we have prepared and translated a new article for you, in which the author answers this question. And also for me personally, this article causes sweet nostalgia, which I hope you will also experience. By the way, at the end of the poll for your favorite of these arcades.
Many of us have fond memories of the games of our childhood and youth. Hours spent playing our favorite Pac-Man, Street Fighter and Frogger are the defining experiences that have shaped us into a lifelong passion for video games.
Since the arcade dominated other genres, the industry has grown exponentially, and now many of the classic games may seem strange or too simple. But if you look deeper, without focusing on their age, you will see that many of them had complex controls, multi-layered mechanics that were understandable but difficult to master, a soundtrack that could still inspire, and a spectacular story.
Old arcade games can still teach a lot today. Therefore, the authors of the article decided to ask the luminaries of the gaming industry what games, in their opinion, can become an example in solving problems in game design.
1) Q*Bert: teaches simplicity
Q*Bert is an arcade game published in 1982 by Gottlieb. The game has become a pop culture icon thanks to its catchy graphics, simple mechanics, and more. The game board consists of 28 dice arranged in a pyramid. Using one joystick, you start from the top and change the color of the cubes by jumping from one to another. The game gradually introduces several enemies that impede your progress. By predicting the movements of opponents and using detours, you need to change the color of the entire pyramid in order to move on to the next level.
Chris Johnson, Senior Producer at Adult Swim Games: “It’s beautiful in its simplicity and how it builds in complexity with additional conditions. And, of course, one cannot fail to note the 100% hit in the player’s emotions when, after another death, a message appears: “@!#?@!’”.
Conclusion: One simple concept, refined to perfection, provides a fun gaming experience and is quite addictive.
2) Centipede: Interaction of game elements with each other
Richard Rose, creator of the upcoming game The Church in the Darkness, explains what you can learn from Centipede and its interconnected environments.
A classic Atari shoot-’em-up game in which each creature interacts in some way with mushrooms that randomly appear on the screen. The player moves the character across the bottom of the screen with the trackball and fires lasers at the centipede advancing on them from the top of the screen down the mushroom field. Hitting any part of the centipede creates a fungus. Spiders periodically eat mushrooms they encounter, and fleas create new mushrooms along the way. Finally, the scorpions poison the mushrooms they touch, allowing the centipede to drop bombs on the player.
“This interaction of different types of enemies with the environment is perfectly balanced. Here, each element matters and can affect the behavior of other elements. And when the player begins to understand these interactions, he significantly improves his skills.”
Conclusion: Centipede exploits the synergy between enemies and the environment, allowing it to add depth and strategy to its lightning-fast gameplay.
3) Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom – an early example of branching narrative
According to Mike Lee, director of game design for Smash+Grab at United Front Games, Capcom’s 1993 game is a good example of branching storytelling. Based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG and set in the setting of Mystara, it features the 4 main fantasy archetypal classes: cleric, warrior, dwarf and elf fighting the monsters of the D&D universe.
Bosses in the game: troll, beholder, archlich and, of course, the dragon. Throughout the history of Tower of Doom, the player makes choices about how they would like to progress. He can choose between doors A or B, for example, or he can take a short cut and go through the woods instead of taking the suggested path.
“Each choice affects the story and the experience you get as you explore the game world, making you want to play the game again” , Lee says.
Output: Branching narrative is a good way to increase replayability.
4) Contra: Improved power-ups
Contra, released in 1987 by Konami, is a run-and-gun game that is a prime example of how power-ups can be used to fundamentally change the user’s movements and attacks .
The player starts with a rifle and unlimited ammo. 4 more weapons are available as power-ups. These are a machine gun, a laser cannon, a cannon with fireballs moving in a spiral and a cannon that shoots in 5 different directions. If the player keeps the default weapon, they get 2 additional power-ups: rapid fire and a force field.
While each of these bonuses is tempting enough to pick up when it appears, not all of them are suitable for every situation.
“If you take a gun that shoots in different directions when you need to focus fire on one point, the game becomes much more difficult. You have to be really good at dodging and dodging while you shoot the main boss, and this can go on forever,” explains Lee from United Front Games. “If you take a laser (which shoots at one point and has a very narrow area of effect) against a large group of dispersed enemies, you will lose very quickly. ”
Output: Power-ups in Contra are an integral part of the gameplay. They force the player to make decisions and plan, choosing the right type of weapon for the current situation.
5) Double Dragon. Storytelling Accuracy Masterclass
“A good story is a good story” says Greg Kasavin of Supergiant Games. Released in 1987, Beat ’em up is an example of a good story.
At the start of the game, members of the Black Warriors kidnap Marian, the lover of martial artist Billy Lee. Seconds later, Billy and his twin brother Jimmy are already fighting their way through gang-controlled territory to get the girl back. This short cut serves as a great introduction to the game’s story, with no narration or dialogue involved.
“Some classic arcade games could capture the conflict, characters, and atmosphere of a game in seconds without resorting to words,” says Kasavin. “Perhaps this was due to some factors that had to be reckoned with then, such as technical limitations and a format that required limiting game sessions in time. But modern developers would do well to take this experience into account in order to learn how to bring the player into the context of their game as quickly and deeply as possible.
Output: When creating a plot for your game, start the plot as early as possible.
6) Gyruss. Continuous experience.
Classic arcade games can almost trance the player through their gameplay and art, says Supergiant Games’ Greg Kasavin.
A good example is Gyruss, a shoot ’em up game released by Konami in 1983. The player controlling the spaceship moves around the screen and shoots at enemy ships. Enemies move in a spiral, can attack the player’s ship and destroy it in the event of a collision. When all enemies are destroyed, the player moves on to a new level. The running field of the game moves from the center of the screen beyond its borders, creating the illusion of flying in space.
Despite the fairly common gameplay, similar to, for example, Galaga, Gyruss is notable for its soundtrack. The game uses an accelerated electronic version of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, which continues to play in the background as the player progresses.
“While in most games the music tends to change from level to level, in Gyruss it just keeps playing and evolving, making the transitions between levels almost imperceptible. In the absence of the usual gaps between levels, fading, pauses, the saturation of the game increases, the player becomes more focused. He begins to perceive the game much more fully and more clearly.”
Output: Like a shark, Gyruss is constantly moving forward, using his continuous music and the constant movement of the background in the game, in order to make the gaming experience continuous.
7) Space Harrier: Give up what you hold dear
Like Gyruss, Sega’s 1985 rail shooter uses pseudo-3D backgrounds and constant movement to create a sense of flow. Space Harrier is one of the earliest third person shooters set in a surreal sci-fi world filled with dragons, cyclops mammoths and flying robots. The hero flies around the screen and uses a laser gun to blow up enemies and move on to the next level.
“Levels progress almost continuously, giving the player only a few moments to catch their breath. It creates the feeling of an ongoing action-packed journey,” says Kasavin.
However, what the Space Harrier ended up with is very different from its original concept. It was originally intended to be a player-controlled jet fighter in realistic combat conditions, but this idea was dropped due to technical limitations. It was then that Sega game designer Yu Suzuki came up with the idea to bring a touch of psychedelic science fiction to the game. Today, Space Harrier is considered one of Suzuki’s best works.
Output: If an idea doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to drop it and try something completely crazy.
So the second article came to an end, in the category of translations from the blog of the program “Management of Internet Game Projects”, we hope the material was interesting and useful.
