Today I’ll tell you about an inexpensive 2DIN radio iMars, which runs on the Android operating system. It is this fact that I consider the main advantage, because in fact you can install any application, and not be limited to what the manufacturer has sewn into the system. The simplest example is navigation. You can install or use the navigator that you think is the best. And without problems to update maps on it, just downloading them from the Internet.

This will only be a first glance, because the harsh winter weather conditions do not encourage picking in the car, and I don’t have a garage where I could do it in the warmth. Nevertheless, I found a way to turn on the radio at home and fully tested all the declared functions, and also listened to how it plays. And at the same time, I took it apart to evaluate the filling.

The rear view camera is very simple, from the category: there is good. It can be useful when reversing when the obstacle is small (fences, stumps, curbs, etc.). For use in the evening, it is equipped with LEDs.

There are no USB connectors in the radio itself, but they can be connected and fixed in a convenient place under the instrument panel.

For reliable reception in the navigator mode, an external antenna is provided with a 3M adhesive mount. Before gluing, be sure to conduct tests (there are built-in to the system) to make sure that the reception quality suits you. The ideal place is of course somewhere under the windshield.

Well, actually the instructions. It is written here what and how to connect, each posting is signed, and if you know at least a little English, then you will figure it out on your own. If you don’t know English, and you have never connected radio tape recorders, even ordinary ones, then it’s better to contact an auto electrician.

Appearance and connection

Well, this is how the radio itself actually looks, most of the area is occupied by a touch screen.

In addition to the fact that the navigation buttons are present in the system (on-screen), they are also duplicated on the left side of the radio itself. That is, you can go to the main screen or adjust the volume at any time. In the upper part, you can see the microphone hole and the reset button, which is recessed into the case.

Auxiliary connectors for connecting additional devices were made different in the number of contacts, that is, it is simply not possible to connect something incorrectly. Each cable has its own connector.

Disassembly

Now disassembly. The radio tape recorder conditionally consists of 2 parts, which are interconnected by loops: a screen and a control board.

The control board is screwed to an aluminum case, which is also used as a heatsink.

Unscrew 4 more screws that hold the board on the case and see what’s on the other side. In two places where heat is removed, special areas are provided on which thermal paste is applied.

This is what the board looks like from the main side, let’s look at the components.

Amplifier YD7388 (similar to EVF7388), according to the characteristics, it should produce 45W for 4 channels at a load of 4 Ohm, the datasheet indicates its nominal power of 25W for 4 channels. This is a budget amplifier and, accordingly, it is suitable only if inexpensive acoustics are used. In my case, this is enough, because there are inexpensive regular speakers. If desired, and if the speakers allow, it can be replaced with something more suitable, for example, the TDA 7850 mosfet, which has a large output power of 50W for 4 channels at a load of 4 Ohm or 80W for 4 channels at a load of 2 Ohm. In addition, it has less noise and distortion and is generally designed for good acoustics.

Now let’s look at the “brains” of the radio:

Features and functionality

In 15 degree frost, I didn’t want to connect and deal with the radio tape recorder, so I carried out all the checks at home in comfortable conditions. For starters, you need to ask her. To do this, I used an old power supply from a stationary PC, in which I closed certain contacts so that it turns on without a motherboard connected.

Well, after that, with the help of a multimeter, I found the necessary contacts with a voltage of 12V and the radio started up! The impression of the screen is not bad, the resolution of 1024 * 600 is sufficient for a diagonal of 7 “and the graininess is not striking, the color reproduction is pleasant.

Apparently, an inexpensive TN matrix is ​​​​used here: viewing angles are good from above and on the sides, but from below it’s a disaster, but since no one is looking at the radio from below, it’s not scary.

The touch screen is sensitive and supports multi-touch.

Let’s see what the radio can do. The Home screen contains shortcuts for quick access to key features. The music player widget is displayed on the left, the analog clock is displayed on the right.

You can only partially change the main screen by selecting a watermark against which the contents of the screen will be displayed.

With a swipe, you can call up a curtain with quick access to some settings, for example, here you can turn off the screen or turn on the bluetooth connection. There is also a Car Amplifier button that switches the radio to a car amplifier (if installed).

Let’s go through the sections in order. Maps will launch the Google Maps application, which works thanks to the built-in navigator. You can distribute the Internet to the radio from your smartphone or simply download maps to the internal memory. You can use other navigators, such as Navitel.

Next radio. Everything is classic here: auto search, manual search and buttons with preset radio stations.

Next is the extensive Bluetooth section. With an active connection to your smartphone, you can make a call using the speakerphone by dialing the number manually or selecting from the phone book (pulled up from the smartphone).

You can use search and call log.

Via bluetooth, you can listen to music stored in your smartphone. For me, this is the most convenient way, because there is always up-to-date music on the phone and there is always the opportunity to quickly download something from the Internet.

A separate tab is provided for managing connections, and in the settings you can set a password for pairing, change the name of the radio and turn off automatic connection.

Skip the section with applications for now and move on to the next music tab. This is music that is stored in the memory of the radio or on a flash drive. A simple and intuitive player allows you to switch the track or change the volume without being distracted from the road.

It is possible to display a list, search and various types of sorting.

If you press the settings button, you will be transferred to the sound settings section. Since I tested the radio at home, I simply connected passive acoustics to it. The sound was not impressive at first, seeming dry and flat, but by turning the equalizer, raising the bass and treble, I managed to get a satisfactory result.

Now let’s go to the applications section. It will show pre-installed applications and everything that you installed in the radio yourself. From the preset, AV-IN can be noted, that is, an external audio-video device. It can be a video recorder or a rear view camera.

Regarding the complete camera, I have already said that it is very lousy, but it allows you to see what is behind the car.

Let’s return to applications. A full-fledged Android Market works and allows you to download any application. Want a third party player or navigation? No problem.

Youtube is also pre-installed, which plays videos in up to 720p quality.

There is also a video player for playing videos from internal or external storage. By the way, the Chinese recorded several of their clips in memory of the radio. The coolest thing about this player is that it can run in windowed mode on top of other applications, and you choose the size of the window and its position yourself.

On the next application page, you can find Explorer and a voice recorder.

The last section on which we will dwell in more detail is the settings. The Device Port section describes each connector, just switch and see the description. It’s funny, but in order to properly connect the radio, you must first connect the radio.

Going into them we see the usual Android menu, the design of which makes it clear that the Android 8.1 stated in the description of the radio on the seller’s page (and even more so Android 9.1, which flaunts in the information about the device) is a linden. In fact, we have a shell that is based on Android 6 (api 23). Although everything has been so changed for use in cars that it practically does not matter.

We go down and see the volume settings by playback type and screen brightness settings based on the time of day.

There is a built-in GPS test to adjust the antenna and the reception quality of the navigator. Only GPS satellites are supported, in cloudy weather near the window the navigator saw 12 satellites, positioning accuracy is 2.4 meters. The car will be even better. Cold start took 19seconds, reconnections 3 – 4 seconds.

I also installed a third-party GPS test, the result is the same. 13 satellites identified, 7 in active work. Positioning accuracy 2 meters.

Let’s go back to the settings. Instead of the Android logo, when you turn on the radio, you can set the logo of your car (or the one you like). There are almost all logos of automobile manufacturers.

General impressions

Let’s start with the fact that my previous radio tape recorder is an old Pioneer, in which the socket falls out from the slightest bump on the road, and only AUX and USB are used as a sound source. Therefore, in terms of functions, I certainly felt an increase of +100500. You can upload clips to a USB flash drive on a long journey and entertain passengers, you can even play angry birds while you are waiting for someone. But the main thing for the radio is, of course, audio playback, and here everything suits me. You can play music simply from your smartphone via bluetooth, switching tracks and adjusting the volume on the radio. Convenient large elements, well-readable font. There is also a speakerphone for calls and phone book synchronization. The sound in the car will be seen later, but what I heard at home on passive acoustics — I liked it.

Most of all, besides the Bluetooth capabilities, I missed the navigator in the old radio. I used my phone for these purposes, but it’s really not convenient, because the battery drains quickly enough, and in the summer the smartphone overheats and turns off the navigator. And here the screen is large, it is convenient to take a glimpse and there are no problems with power supply.
