While there are no set rules for determining the right size – there are some guidelines you can follow to get the most out of your TV.

To maintain the maximum field of view- that is, be able to catch all the action on screen, one has to consider the recommended viewing distance for the resolution type to come up with the right TV that will give you maximum viewing pleasure.

Although big sizes may be the preference for most, take note that it may not always be better. bear in mind that our field of view is measured at 120 degrees.

So there’s really no benefit in getting a very big TV for a small room since you won’t be able to see all the action if half of the screen falls out of that field of vision.

The suggested distance the closest you can sit from your TV with a 1080p resolution is suggested to be at least 1 to 1.5 times the diagonal measurement of the TV screen.

So if you want a big 75-inch screen, you’ll need to be sitting between 75 to 112 inches away (or 6.25 to 9.4 feet).

Or you can compute in reverse if you want to arrive at a screen size- with a maximum sitting distance of 6 feet, divide by 1.5 equals 4 feet which converts to 48 inches.

This maximum *suggested distance for a 1080p screen is the minimum distance you need to be sitting at to enjoy the benefits of a 2160p or 4K Ultra High Definition TV of the same screen size.

You might want to consider too, that although a 4K gives much more detail up close, sitting too far away from a 4K UHD, you may notice that you won’t see a significant difference between a 1080p from a 4K anymore. This is because there’s a limit to what our eyes can perceive.

4K Ultra High Definition/UHD 2160p

For a truly immersive viewing experience with life-like details, it’s great to get a big screen TV. But how different is a 1080p screen from a 2160p?

A  4K has 4 times higher resolution than a 1080p screen. It is densely packed with 8 million active pixels providing for a richer color palette that gives exceptional contrast and depth- making images come alive with details that’s definitely breathtaking.

With a 4K UHD, you can sit as close as 1.5 times as the screen’s diagonal size and really immerse yourself in the action and still see the whole picture.

And if you’re more comfortable to be a bit farther away, make sure you’re not too far back that you’re missing out on the high definition details that you’ve paid for.

The recommended maximum distance is about 2.5 times the diagonal size of your screen.

For as long as I can remember television manufacturers have given the screen measurement as a diagonal measured from one corner to another. There is nothing wrong with measuring televisions this way but it doesn’t really make it apparent how much larger or smaller one TV is than another, especially when comparing older 4:3 aspect ratio television vs. the newer 16:9 standard.

When people moved on from 4:3 CRT televisions to widescreen 16:9 televisions they found that a 32″ 4:3 seemed much larger than a 32″ 16:9 and it is. When watching 4:3 content the 32″ “square” CRT has a total viewable area of around 491 sq. inches vs. the 32″ widescreen TV which has 328 square inches viewable, a difference of 49%.

How much Bigger is One Screen vs. Another?

An example, you are shopping for a new TV and deciding between a 46″ and a 55″ TV, how much bigger is a 55 inch screen over a 46? At first you’d obviously think it’s 9 inches bigger, that it is 20% larger. That is actually selling the 55″ screen short by quite a bit. The viewable screen area of a 46″ TV is about 906 square inches and the viewable area of a 55″ TV is 1293 square inches, the 55 is actually 42% larger than the 46.

How about a 65″ plasma vs a 50″ plasma? If you just took the diagonal measurement that the manufacturer gives you would say that the 65″ is only 30% larger than the 50″ but when you look at actual screen area the 65″ has 1809 sq. inches of viewable area and the 50″ has 1068 sq. inches. The 65″ is just shy of 70% larger than the 50″.

TV diagonal in inches and centimeters

When buying a TV, the first thing they look at is the screen size. Many, out of inexperience, believe that this value is the total size of the technique, including the frame of the frame. But the diagonal is the size of the display itself, the matrix.

Difference between an inch and a centimeter

Display diagonals are measured in inches for the reason that most of the television panels produced are produced in foreign countries.

An inch is a unit by which length or distance is measured. It has found wide application in the USA, although it was invented in England. As a general rule, 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters.

A centimeter is a unit of measurement that is relevant for the metric system. 1 cm \u003d 0.01 m. Converting the diagonal of the TV from inches to centimeters is a simple task. Multiply inches by 2.54 to get cm (may be rounded as 2.5). And vice versa, knowing centimeters, they get inches – the figure is divided by 2.54.

Diagonals of displays are measured in inches for the reason that most of the television panels produced are manufactured in foreign countries in which this system of measurements has been adopted. In the USSR, the metric system operated, with centimeters.

For example, the TV model “Berezka 61ТЦ-311D” had a diagonal of 61 cm, which is indicated in the name. Today, TV manufacturers in Russia adhere to the European system when describing device parameters.

If you specify other values ​​in the model name, such as height or width, this complicates its presentation. It is for this reason that manufacturers “switched” to inches.

How the diagonal is measured

When buying a new TV, many users incorrectly determine its dimensions, believing that this value is the width between the corners of the case.

The main parameter is the diagonal – a line from one opposite corner of the screen to another, for example, from the bottom left to the top right. That is, you need to measure only the display, without taking into account the frame of the case.

In the name of TVs, the designations of the screen diagonal are now attributed. For example, the Sony KDL-32WD603 model. The number “32” is the dimensions of the display in inches. Conversion to centimeters:

  1. 1″ = 2.54 cm.
  2. 32 inches x 2.54 = 81.28 cm.
  3. The manufacturer does not specify the display width and height. Here you can refer to the table.

And what if the diagonal is unknown for some reason. To do this, use a ruler and tape measure to measure the screen size horizontally and vertically. These numbers are squared, added up and taken as a root.

For example, having measured the dimensions, it turns out that horizontally 75 cm, vertically – 35 cm. The squares of the numbers are 5625 and 1225.

In total, it turns out – 6850. After extracting the root, 82.7 remains. But, since the measurements were carried out in centimeters, they are converted to inches: 82.7 divided by 2.54 \u003d a little more than 32 inches. A calculator is useful for such calculations, but now there are various services on the network that will do all the calculations in a second.

Which diagonal to choose

When choosing a TV, you should rely only on the screen size

The display diagonal is considered an independent characteristic, independent of other equipment parameters. The electronics market confirms this. For example, you can easily find a model with a small diagonal and high resolution, and vice versa, with a large screen, but a small resolution.

But this does not mean that when choosing a TV receiver, you should rely only on the size of the screen. To get a high-quality, detailed picture, consider:

  • distance from the viewer to the TV;
  • display resolution.

The resolution itself, in turn, depends on the characteristics of the matrix and the content being played (on a 4K device, you can run a video with a resolution of, for example, 1024 x 768 pixels, but it will “stretch”, due to which all imperfections will be visible) .

If the picture is high resolution, it is “assembled” from more pixels. And to evaluate the quality, you can reduce the distance to the panel.

If you watch low-quality content nearby (terrestrial TV channels), then all the flaws in the picture and video processing will be noticeable. If you increase the distance, the errors become less noticeable.

For example, there is a 32 inch TV used to watch broadcasts on the air. The recommended screen distance would be 3 diagonals, i.e. 32 x 3 = 96” or, if translated into centimeters, 96 x 2.54 = 243. Rounded up, it turns out to be about 2.5 meters.

With a display resolution of 720p, the normal distance is considered to be from 1.9 m. For Full HD content, even less – 1.3 m. These are the minimum allowable distances from which image distortion will not be visible.

It turns out that with an available distance to the panel of 2.2 m, you can take a TV with a diagonal of 37 inches (resolution – HD Ready). For Full HD models, the diagonal can be 52”. And for modern 4K devices – 60 ”at the same distance, without reducing the picture quality.

Knowing the viewing distance, you can easily choose the right size TV. Or the diagonal is selected first, and then the installation location. By correctly choosing and calculating the screen size, the user receives a high-quality picture, which increases viewing comfort. But, the larger the screen, the more expensive the TV model.

Modern TVs are available in three resolutions: 1080p, 4K and 8K. We recommend that you choose 4K TVs because the available content to watch in 8K resolution is limited at the moment. In addition, 4K viewing already requires excellent Internet speed, but it may not be enough to download 8K content.

This factor is taken into account when buying a TV, since TVs of the same size but with different resolutions will need to be placed at different distances. Also, if the space is small, it is better to choose a smaller TV with a higher resolution, because then you can sit closer to it, and the size is enough to cover the entire field of view.
