How to find hidden cameras | Kaspersky Blog
Directional microphones, hidden cameras and other surveillance equipment – it seems that the average person encounters all this only in spy movies. However, such devices can be found in a small rented apartment, in an expensive hotel room, in an office, in a sauna .
.. and even in your own home. Today we will talk about several ways to detect a hidden camera.
Big Brother’s Little Relatives
Miniature cameras are inexpensive, starting at $4 at the time of writing. They can be connected to regular Wi-Fi so that they transmit information, for example, to cloud storage. Therefore, if desired, many can afford to play a spy in real life. But why?
It happens that such devices are installed by the owner of a rental apartment – in case of theft or damage to property. Both jealous spouses and dishonest competitors can do this. There are also prank lovers who publish funny or spicy shots that they managed to capture, and professional blackmailers.
How realistic is it for an ordinary person to become an object of surveillance? According to a study among travelers who used the Airbnb service, 11% of respondents found hidden cameras in the filmed premises. And these are only those who managed to find something, and not every tourist carefully considers the decor of the room.
At the same time, it is not easy to detect the camera: the diameter of its lens can be only 1-2 millimeters, and the body is usually hidden or camouflaged. How to find out about possible surveillance?
Method 1: Rely on an expert
The most reliable way is to entrust the search for a hidden camera to a qualified specialist with professional equipment. You can find such an expert today in almost any city – for example, order a service on Avito or another ad service.
Advantages:
- High efficiency.
- Confidence in the result.
- Minimum personal effort.
Weaknesses:
- Price.
- You may have to wait for a window in loading the specialist.
- May be prohibited by hotel policy or apartment owner.

It is worth inviting a specialist if you are going to check the premises in which you plan to stay often and for a long time.
For example, it makes sense to do this after buying an apartment, especially if you are not the first owner.
Method 2: Use special equipment
You can buy devices to detect hidden cameras (such as electromagnetic radiation detectors or optical detectors) and use them to check each room yourself. The most budgetary, with a detection radius of only a few meters, cost from three dollars, professional ones are both more powerful and more expensive.
By the way, the simplest optical detector can be assembled by hand – this will require red LEDs and a red light filter. Direct the light to a certain area of the room and look through the filter – the camera lens will appear as a bright point. True, it must be borne in mind that the range of such a device will not exceed a dozen meters.
If you decide to check the apartment or house yourself, pay special attention to the bathroom and bedroom, where you can take especially interesting shots, as well as smoke detectors and household appliances – micro cameras are often built into larger devices.
In addition, they can be hidden in paintings, watches, flower pots and even toys.
Advantages: :
- Independence.
- Ability to perform regular checks.
- Possibility to assemble the tool yourself.
Disadvantages: :
- Short range of cheap and homemade devices.
- Price of professional detectors.
- Making your own detectors takes time and skill.

If you don’t trust your privacy to others, prefer to see for yourself in important matters, and ideally you also know how to solder LEDs, this method is for you.
Method 3. Use the capabilities of your smartphone
Sometimes you can do without special equipment, a smartphone camera and a flashlight are enough. Turn off the lights and draw the curtains (the room must be dark), turn on the flashlight and the camera on your phone at the same time and point them at the places where you think there might be a recording device.
If it really is there, then you can see glare on the smartphone screen. The camera on the phone may not turn on at the same time as the backlight, in which case a separate flashlight will do.
In some cases, you can do without a flashlight. Many hidden cameras are equipped with infrared lights so that you can shoot in the dark. The human eye does not see this radiation, but the front camera of the smartphone is able to catch it. When shooting in the dark, the infrared light source will appear as a flickering dot on the screen. The main camera may not be able to cope here – often there is a light filter in it. To see if your smartphone is suitable for detecting IR sources, you can experiment with any remote control.
Advantages:
- Free.
- Does not require special skills.
- As a rule, any traveler has everything he needs.
Disadvantages:
- Does not work with all phone models.
- Time consuming.
- Low efficiency – false alarms are possible, cameras without infrared radiation are not visible.
Summary
The method is suitable only for a superficial examination: the probability of missing something is too high. However, if there is no more suitable tool at hand, it is better than nothing.
Method 4: Trust the application
There are special mobile applications that make it easier to find hidden cameras and other devices that violate your privacy. They fall into two categories.
The former make it easier to find a hidden camera by the brilliance of its lens – as in the previous method. These include, for example, the Glint Finder application. It finds the glare that occurs when the light of a flashlight hits the lens – you just have to check for suspicious places.
The latter are designed to search for spy devices connected to the wireless network. For them to work, you need to connect to the local Wi-Fi.
After scanning the router, they display a list of devices connected to it. If you are not in a smart home, where even a refrigerator and a coffee maker are online, and there is something on the list besides your smartphone and laptop, then it makes sense to check what it is. To check, you can use a special service that will help you distinguish harmless equipment from tracking devices by ID.
Advantages:
- Relatively high efficiency.
- Minimum cost.
- A compatible smartphone is sufficient for operation.
Disadvantages:
- Inferior to specialized devices.
- The option with Wi-Fi detectors is not suitable for smart homes.
- Also, it is not suitable for hotel Wi-Fi and other public routers with many users connected to it.

Special software occupies an intermediate position between professional equipment and improvised means.
Perhaps this is the best option for prudent travelers – provided they use a proven application.
What to do if you find a spy device
If you find something that looks like a camera or other tracking device, take a photo of it and try to find similar images using image search. The find may well turn out to be something harmless.
If the fears are confirmed, then you should contact the police, the hotel administration or the service through which you booked accommodation. For example, AirBnB rules explicitly forbid the use of hidden cameras, so at least some guests managed to get their money back or change accommodation.
Trust but verify
So, now you know a few ways to make sure that neither the blackmailer, nor the TikToker prankster, nor the landlord is renting you without permission. But hidden cameras are not the only danger in travel. Here are some general tips to help you stay safe in unfamiliar territory:
