Apple AirPlay 2
If you use Apple AirPlay 2 on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you can use it to create a wireless audio system. Any speaker with AirPlay 2 can be incorporated into an AirPlay system controlled directly from your device. This is true regardless of brand.
If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can use Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV 4K to control Apple Music with voice commands. Tell it what selection or playlist to play — and which compatible speakers or components you want it to play through.
The disadvantage is that everything is streaming through your iPhone or iPad.
Which means if your housemate’s iPhone is streaming throughout your home, when they step out the music will stop.
Google Chromecast built-in
Google’s Chromecast built-in also lets you create a multi-room audio system with compatible speakers and components. The network is controlled through the Google Home app on your smartphone or tablet.

Smart speakers for added lifestyle options
You may already be familiar with smart speakers offered by Amazon and Google. These speakers wirelessly connect to your Wi-Fi network to access your streaming services directly.
And they offer other services as well. You can get news and weather updates, get reminders from your calendar, and much more. You can also use these speakers to control various smart home devices such as lights, thermostats, and locks.
Voice-controlled speakers like the Google Nest Audio can form a multi-room audio system.
And they can offer additional services, such as news and weather updates on demand.
These speakers are also compatible with Wi-Fi multi-room speakers. For example, if you have a Sonos multi-room system, you can add your Amazon Echo Show to it. Once connected, you can issue commands through the Show via Alexa to play music through Sonos speakers in another room.
Before buying, though, be sure to research the product thoroughly. Multi-room audio systems don’t always support all the features of smart speakers. Software updates happen almost continually, though, so what may or may not be possible can change very quickly.

Receivers with built-in streaming
If you like having a traditional home theater or home audio setup with a receiver being the heart of your system, good news. Many of today’s receivers have built-in Wi-Fi, and can wirelessly connect to your home network.

Do you own a legacy receiver that doesn’t have Bluetooth built in? You don’t necessarily have to replace it to use wireless speakers. A variety of Bluetooth adapters are available. These plug into one of your receiver’s inputs, usually with RCA connectors. An added advantage is that you can use a Bluetooth adapter to stream music from your receiver to wireless headphones.

How to turn an old receiver into a hipster Bluetooth speaker

In previous years, all things were done in good faith, and many of them still retained their efficiency even after decades. If an old radio has been preserved in your pantry, do not throw it away, you can make a wireless speaker out of it, which no one else has. This will require a donor – a working wireless speaker, as well as a few more components and the ability to work with radio components.
Check if the speaker in the old radio is still there and if it is still usable.
To do this, disassemble the receiver and the new wireless speaker, solder the old speaker to it instead of the existing one, and listen to how it sounds. If it wheezes or doesn’t play at all, find a speaker in a radio store or flea market with similar dimensions and decent appearance. It is important that the mounting holes are in the same place as the old speaker, otherwise you will have to use glue. Why not use an old speaker? Most likely, over the years, he loosened up and began to wheeze, or even failed. In any case, it will sound worse than a similar new one.
Install the wireless speaker into the receiver housing and secure the speaker with bolts or glue. Provide an opening through which you can turn on the column.
If you don’t feel sorry for the wireless speaker, you can glue it inside the case, otherwise you can just put it there, securing it with something (for example, with double-sided tape). If you wish, you can improve the sound by placing another speaker inside (for example, a low-frequency one) – this way the sound will be deeper and stronger.
Surely the body of the old receiver is larger than that of the wireless speaker, which means that the free space can be used to accommodate an additional battery. Alternatively, you can use a portable charger: charge it, insert it into the receiver and connect it to the speaker. Its battery life can be extended many times. Of course, you will have to take it out to charge the power bank, but you can fix it tightly and bring it out through the hole to a USB port or charging cable. If you stuff a decent amount of batteries, you will have to charge such a “radio” once every few months.
Typically, batteries with a low capacity (for example, 1000 mAh) are installed in wireless speakers, and with the help of portable charging, it can be increased several times – the battery life will increase by the same amount.

How to make any speakers wireless
Don’t change speakers just because they don’t have Bluetooth. Especially when it comes to acoustics, which suits the sound quality. The problem can be solved with an inexpensive adapter.
How to choose and connect a Bluetooth receiver
First of all, you need to determine what inputs the speakers have. Usually these are analog RCA connectors (aka “tulips”) or a 3.5 mm jack. In this case, you will need an inexpensive Bluetooth receiver, which can be found on Aliexpress. It is enough to connect it with a wire to the speakers and connect it to your phone via Bluetooth so that you can transfer music. Connecting wirelessly is as easy as connecting your smartphone to Bluetooth headphones.
This receiver model has two digital outputs – optical and coaxial
If you need to connect acoustics with a digital input (for example, passive speakers that work through an amplifier or AV receiver), you will have to find more expensive devices with the appropriate outputs. Otherwise, the principle of operation is no different.

The connection, of course, will not be to the speakers themselves, but to the linear input of the radio. The difference between the car receiver and the rest lies in a more convenient format. One end of the receiver is inserted into the USB connector (it serves only for power supply, if it is not in the car, you can purchase an adapter for the cigarette lighter), the other end into the radio line input. When ordering, do not confuse with models that transmit music via radio. In reviews of such devices, they often complain about interference and poor sound quality.
Codecs and sound quality
There are different codecs for transferring music via Bluetooth. In the basic version, this is SBC. Modern Android smartphones can output audio via Bluetooth with better codecs like AptX, AptX HD or LDAC. However, for everything to work correctly, you need codec support from the receiver. This is true for both wireless headphones and Bluetooth receivers.

Pay attention to the codec support of the selected device.
Aliexpress has receivers with support for advanced codecs. For example, this model works with LDAC, simpler options with AptX. And for Apple smartphones, you need to look for a receiver with AAC support – in theory, a better codec than SBC.
Please note that in order to activate the highest quality codec, you may need to select it manually. You can do this in the settings for developers (we have already written about how to get there more than once, for example, in this article). Look for “Bluetooth Audio Codec”.
Pay attention to the Bluetooth version as well. Devices with a version below 5.0 should not be taken
It is worth noting that the sound quality depends not only on the codec used. In the case of an analog connection (since the end receiver is responsible for processing the sound with a digital one), the digital-to-analog converter also plays a role. Speakers can be as high quality as you like, but a cheap Bluetooth receiver will negate all efforts. In the same way, cheap built-in sound in the motherboard “kills” sound, which we wrote about in more detail in the article “Does a computer need a separate sound card?”.
Pay attention to which DAC is installed. Devices based on the popular ESS Saber will cost more, but the sound will also be better.
How to output sound to wireless speakers if the source does not have Bluetooth
You can output sound to wireless speakers not only from your phone, but also from other equipment that has Bluetooth. Most often it is a TV or computer. If the equipment does not have wireless interfaces, then this is easy to fix.
For games, it is better to use the AptX LL low-latency codec
In the case of a computer, you will need a USB adapter (read our article on how to choose it). For a TV or any other sound source, you need to purchase a transmitter.
