The new Google Nest Cam is a wired, indoor-only camera with free smart alerts for people, pets, and vehicles.
Indoor cameras are an awkward category. It’s hard to find a way to fit one into your home without feeling like Big Brother is watching you. My family hates having them in the house and only grudgingly lets me set them up to test as long as I take them down as soon as possible. Despite my assurances that the devices are set to not record when we’re home — they just don’t quite believe me. And they’re not alone.
Making a camera prettier so it blends in better with your home — as is the case with Google’s newest $100 Nest Cam (indoor) — may feel like a step in the right direction, but it really isn’t. In the end, it’s still a big black eye staring at you — no matter how attractive its exterior casing.

How we rate and review products
If you’re going to have an indoor camera, you need a really good reason. Security — while a valid reason for some — can be just as easily achieved with a well-placed outdoor camera (and be much less likely to catch you in your knickers by accident). Safety — checking to see if you left the stove on or looking in on the living room when your smart smoke alarm goes off is fine in theory — but, in reality, requires a camera in every nook and cranny where something could conceivably go wrong (which is the theory behind Ring’s new Always Home Cam). Ultimately, the most popular reason to use indoor cameras is to check in on pets and kids.
As a pet / child cam, the Nest Cam — which is part of Google’s new lineup of security cameras that includes a doorbell, an indoor / outdoor camera, and a floodlight cameras — does a nice job. Its best feature is its on-device processing that delivers snappy (and free) smart alerts to tell you whether it’s a cat or your child that just snuck into the kitchen before dinner.
With three hours of free event playback, you can see what went on without having to pay a monthly subscription fee (as long as you catch the alert within that three-hour window), and thanks to some local storage, the camera can record an hour’s worth of events if the internet goes down. If you spring for Google’s Nest Aware plan (starting at $6 a month), you can add the excellent Familiar Faces feature (which will tell you which child snuck into the kitchen — but sadly not which cat) and enable 24/7 recording (a handy feature if you want to see what your dog did all day or “film” a party or event at your home).
Unfortunately, the Nest Cam is not as good at either of these things as Nest’s previous camera — the $299 Nest Cam IQ Indoor. It had the option of sound alerts to detect a dog barking and people talking and could record a timelapse — which was a fun use of 24/7 recording. Granted, it was $200 more expensive and quite large and bulky in comparison to the diminutive newer model, but I’m not usually a fan of making smart home devices dumber or less capable.
Perhaps Google thinks the fancy 4K sensor-powered Nest Cam IQ with a built-in Google Assistant was overkill for the average person, and maybe it was. But that doesn’t explain why the newer Nest Cam with its 1080p, 2-megapixel camera has significantly worse video quality than the older version, beyond just lower resolution. Google said it ditched the 4K sensors to help preserve bandwidth (its wired cameras are notorious data hogs), but based on my testing, competitors’ cameras that cost under $50 have better video quality than this camera. They don’t look as pretty, though.
The Nest Cam struggled with contrast and definition in indoor lighting situations.
The $36 Wyze cam with similar specs as the Nest Cam captured much clearer footage, as you can see in this screenshot taken at the same time in the same location as the Nest Cam.
In my testing, I compared the Nest Cam side-by-side with a $36 Wyze Cam V3, and the Wyze Cam produced much better quality images. The images from the Nest Cam were over-saturated, dark, and regularly had a lot of artefacting. They also looked like I was viewing my home through rose-tinted glasses. I tested two units because Google said it has identified an issue with some cameras where the auto-white balance is out of whack, causing the rosy tint. But both cameras I tested had the same issue. Google says it’s rolling out a fix next month, and I’ll re-test and update this review if I see any changes.
I also did a comparison with the Nest Cam battery, which is Google’s new indoor / outdoor camera that has the option of being wired. It didn’t struggle as much with the contrast as the wired version, but its indoor images were not as crisp and clear as those it captured outdoors.

Night vision on the Nest Cam was more successful — and definitely not rose-tinted. The standard black and white video captures up to 15 feet at night, which is more than you’d need in most home environments. The 6x digital zoom (a step down from the Nest Cam IQ’s 12x) gave me enough pixels to zoom in on faces and make them out clearly.
Of course, video quality isn’t everything when it comes to a smart home security camera. It’s no good having top-quality video if you can’t access it quickly on a useable app. Design and build are also factors, as are privacy features, audio quality, and smart home integrations.
The Nest Cam can be mounted to a ceiling or wall using screws.
The Nest Cam has a nice design and the unique option of four color choices — white, grey, blue, and pink. It’s also surprisingly small — the base is almost as big as the camera, and the two together top out at just under four inches. A maple wood base on the pink camera is a nice decor touch, but I didn’t like the limited amount of flexibility the camera had on the mount (which it’s fixed, too). While you can mount it on the wall, as well as sit flat on a table or shelf, it only tilts up and down a few degrees, making it tricky to position perfectly in some situations. You can move it side to side almost a complete 360 degrees, but the fixed cord will stop you from going all the way around.
When the camera is recording, a small LED on the camera glows green, and this can’t be disabled. If someone is viewing the live stream, the LED flashes. This is a good privacy feature — although not enough to assuage the fears of my family. Ultimately, a physical hardware shutter is the only thing that will make most people feel comfortable, and I’m surprised Google didn’t offer this option.
The Nest Cam is only slightly taller than a travel sized bottle of hand sanitizer.
The Nest Cam has full-duplex two-way audio, which worked well in my testing. I could carry on a conversation as if it were a telephone call — even talking over each other and still being able to hear. That experience is much better than a lot of indoor security cameras where the interaction is more like a walkie-talkie, and lag time can be really frustrating.
The Nest Cam is also fast at sending alerts. Notifications for motion, animals, people, and vehicles (there’s not a lot of traffic in my living room, to be fair) arrived on my iPhone 13 just 1 to 3 seconds after the action. This would give me plenty of time to react — however, the Google Home app takes up to 10 seconds to pull up the footage. For just quickly viewing footage, the Nest Hub smart displays are faster than the app, pulling up a feed within a couple seconds, but you can’t interact with the feed or talk to someone through the Hub.
This brings me to my other issue with the Nest Cam: the Google Home app. You have to use it with this camera; it won’t work with the Nest app. I have used and loved the Nest app for years, and its ability to quickly scroll through footage and recorded events all on one page is something I really miss here. With the Home app, you have to tap into two or three different screens to see clips, live footage, or a timeline, and the timeline scroll is very slow (Google has said it’s fixing this).
While the accuracy of alerts in the newer Nest Cams is far superior to the older ones — which would routinely ping me 35 times in the middle of the night because a spider was building its web on the camera — digging in the Settings section of the Google Home app to figure out how to set up an activity zone is almost as tiresome. But Google has clearly indicated that it plans to migrate everything from the Nest app, so we’ll all have to struggle on in the Home app.
The Nest Cam uses an attached 10 foot USB-A power cable, which can plug into the included power brick.
There is simply too much going on in the Home app to make using it as a security camera hub a pleasant experience. And while the camera interface has some nice touches (like seeing a live feed of all your cameras when you open it), it’s too fiddly and requires too many taps and clicks and scrolls to get to the footage you want.
It’s also missing some features from the Nest app, including scheduling your cameras to come on and off at certain times. Instead, there’s a Routine that will control them based on your location, but that’s not helpful if you want them on at night while you are sleeping. There is an option to only get notified when the camera is on and no one is home, which helps a bit, but scheduling doesn’t feel like a big ask.

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.

You also can’t use Google’s Nest cameras in any ecosystem other than Google Home. The old Nest cameras worked with Amazon Alexa and, more recently, SmartThings, but these are Google only. If you are running a Google smart home, that won’t be an issue — these cameras integrate nicely with any other Google-compatible device. Except for in one odd way — you can’t view your camera feed on a Chromecast-enabled TV. Google says it’s working on adding the feature, as well as a web interface, which was a feature of Nest cameras.
While I do appreciate Google’s efforts to make smart home devices more suited to our home, and the local processing is an excellent step forward, I don’t like seeing devices lose functionality. Google still has a lot of work to do with the Nest Cam, and that’s a shame because Nest’s indoor cameras were the industry gold standard. Now, in far too many respects, they’re playing catch up.

Artificial Intelligence
While the Nest Cam Indoor doesn’t come with any artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, users can buy person detection through Nest Aware. Person detection means that the camera doesn’t just alert users of any motion that their Nest Cam Indoors capture. Rather, they’ll only be notified if the Nest Cam Indoor detects a person, making for notifications that matter more.
Nest Aware takes it a step further with familiar face alerts. Over time, the camera will begin to recognize certain faces, which the user can name in the Nest app. Users can also receive dog-barking alerts and person speaking alerts, making for a smart camera that’s truly intelligent.

Nest has instructions on how to set up their cameras and connect them to the Nest app on their website. Here are the first few steps:

Scan the QR code on the bottom of the Nest Cam Indoor and name it in the Nest app by its location.
Plug in the Nest Cam Indoor and add it to the home WiFi.
Subscription Plans
Currently, users can purchase Nest Aware by the amount of cloud storage they’ll receive: 30 days of cloud storage for $6 a month or $60 a year, or 60 days of cloud storage for $12 a month or $120 a year. Users can choose from monthly, flexible contracting that can be cancelled anytime, or annual contracting, which can save users $12 or $24 a year.
Professional monitoring costs either $19 a month if the user wants to sign up for a three-year contract, or $29 a month if the customer wants month-to-month contracting. Like we said, this includes cellular backup.

This is much improved from the last time we tested out the camera and its app, so we’re glad to see that Nest has been improving it, and we agree with the high rating, as this app is very easy to use.

In this section, we’re comparing the Nest Cam Indoor to the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor, the Nest Cam Outdoor and the Arlo Pro 2.
Nest Cam Indoor vs. Nest Cam IQ Indoor
The Nest Cam IQ Indoor is basically a more advanced version of the Nest Cam Indoor, costing $299 in comparison to $199. The cameras both have 1080p HD video, 130-degree fields of view, and the same storage options and smart platform integrations. However, the IQ has twice the amount of LED sensors than the Nest Cam Indoor, making the infrared night vision twice as impressive, plus the ability to zoom in 12 times as opposed to eight. And with a speaker seven times more powerful, the IQ also has improved two-way audio.

Finally, the Nest Cam IQ Indoor includes person detection, unlike the Nest Cam Indoor, and it can be wireless or plugged in, while the Nest Cam Indoor is plug-in only. We’d recommend the Nest Cam IQ Indoor to users that want the improved video, night vision, audio, and AI features, but the Nest Cam Indoor to users more concerned with saving the extra $100. The Nest Cam Outdoor is the original outdoor camera from Nest. Unlike the Nest Cam Indoor, it has an IP rating of 65, meaning it’s weatherproof and can be used in temperatures from negative four to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. But in terms of features, it’s pretty similar to the Nest Cam Indoor, with the exact same video, audio, night vision, storage options, smart platform integrations and AI. Nest Cam Indoor vs. Arlo Pro 2
Unlike the Nest Cam Indoor, the Arlo Pro 2 can be used outside in temperatures from negative four to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It also works with Alexa and Google Assistant in addition to IFTTT, Stringify and Apple HomeKit. The Arlo Pro 2 also has local storage and seven days of free cloud storage, while Nest only gives users three hours for free.

Both cameras have 1080p HD video, eight times zoom, 130-degree fields of view, and infrared night vision, although we weren’t super impressed with the Arlo Pro 2’s night vision, two-way audio, and person detection available for an extra cost. The Arlo Pro 2 is wireless with a battery life of three to six months, while the Nest Cam Indoor only plugs in.

Our Experience Contacting Support
When we couldn’t find our answers on Nest’s online support center, we were forced to use either live chat or the phone line. Unfortunately, the phone support was pretty poor. Our representative didn’t seem to be very knowledgeable about the Nest products in general and knew about as much as was on the website, defeating the purpose of the phone line itself.
Amazon Ratings
The Nest Cam Indoor currently has a 4.1 out of five star rating on Amazon, which is really good. However, when we searched “customer support,” we found that the majority of the reviews were one star. One user complained of the phone line specifically,
“Over the course of the last 5 days, I’ve called Nest support 3 times by phone and have been on hold for a total of 3 hours and never got through. I contacted them on Twitter but they told me I had to call by phone. Their support department does not have an email address – or if they do, they don’t advertise it…”
Unfortunately, this matched our experience with Nest’s phone line, which should only be used as a last resort after the online options.

Is the Nest indoor camera wireless?
The Nest Cam Indoor is not wireless. Rather, it needs to be plugged into power to work. However, the Nest Cam IQ Indoor can be either wireless or plug-in.

Where should I put my Nest camera indoors?

Is a Nest worth the money?
Nest cameras are worth the money. They are at the top of their game in terms of video, audio, night vision, smart platform integrations and artificial intelligence. But for a user on a budget, the original Nest cameras, the Nest Cam Indoor and the Nest Cam Outdoor, are a better option than the Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Nest Cam IQ Outdoor.

Mounts with at least some versatility and adjustment are becoming a standard product on the market, but is it a requirement?
Should a wall-mounted TV be tilted? If the TV is above the viewer’s eye line, a downward tilt can prevent neck and eye strain. Tilting a screen can also prevent glare from inconveniently placed lights. Based on the aesthetic design of the space, a tilted screen may also fit in better.

What is a Tilted TV Wall Mount?
A tilted TV wall mount is any mount that is bolted directly into the wall and has a mechanism to adjust and face your TV downward. While this can quickly kill the “picture-frame” type illusion some find preferable, some enjoy the space to hide cabling and sometimes even some smaller cable boxes or other streaming equipment.
While there are benefits to each mount aesthetically, the option of the tilt can come in handy for a lot of viewers. Sometimes people do not have any good spot for watching TV because of the room’s features, and a tilted mount can work around limitations of a space.
Pros and Cons of Tilted TV Wall Mounts
Now that you understand how the two types of mounts compare, let’s focus in on some of the unique features of tilted wall mounts.
Pros
Reduced Neck and Eye Strain
If you’re getting stiff or feeling fatigued after only a short time of watching, it could be that your TV is mounted too high. Try adjusting to a downward tilt, if the option is available, to see if some discomfort is eased. If you have a flat wall mount, you may consider adjusting its height, but a tilted mount makes this adjustment much easier. Glare Resistance/Reduction
A tilted TV mount allows you to angle the screen not just once, but as necessary, which means if you have issues with sun glare to lights in your house, you can tilt the TV as these lights shift throughout the day quickly and easily.

More Complicated Install
There’s no question that a tilted mount will be harder to install than a flush-mount, but just remember that hardware manufacturers are designing these systems so that they can be installed by homeowners for the most part. Description of the invention to the patent
The invention relates to the field of aircraft gas turbine engines (GTE), in particular to the annular combustion chambers of GTE.
An annular combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine of a countercurrent semi-loop type is known, containing a flame tube in the form of an outer and inner casing, between which an annular combustion space is formed, into which compressed air enters from the gas turbine compressor [1]. The outer casing has a cylindrical shell, passing in the front part into a rounded wall near the compressor, and a plurality of fuel injectors are placed in the rear part of the combustion chamber.
The disadvantage of such a combustion chamber is the increased circumferential non-uniformity of the temperature field, which reduces the resource of the combustion chamber and turbine.
An annular combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine, selected as the closest analogue, is known, containing a nozzle rotating on the rotor of the gas turbine engine, supplying fuel to the space of the flame tube between the inner and outer casings. The gas flow in the cavity of the combustion chamber moves first radially, then in the axial direction, while the air from the compressor is supplied to the cavity of the inner casing through the hollow blades of the turbine nozzle apparatus [2].
The disadvantage of the known combustion chamber is the insufficient completeness of fuel combustion and a small range of stable operation of the compressor in off-design modes of operation, increased emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
The objective of the invention is to increase the completeness of fuel combustion and to expand the range of stable operation of the compressor in off-design modes, to reduce the emission of harmful substances.
The problem is solved by the fact that in the annular combustion chamber of the gas turbine engine, containing a body, a flame tube having outer and inner casings with air holes and a partition dividing the volume of the chamber into a central and peripheral part, the partition is made of a double, cylindrical shape, and a rotating nozzle located diametrically opposite the cylindrical partition.
Placement of the injector opposite the annular baffle and the double baffle makes it possible to reduce the emission of harmful substances by improving the mixing of the fuel-air mixture and increasing the combustion efficiency, as well as to increase the reliability and service life of the combustion chamber and turbine by reducing the circumferential unevenness of the temperature field in the chamber.

The combustion chamber is located in the engine between the compressor 1 and the turbine 2, contains a housing 3, a flame tube 4 in the form of an outer casing 5 and an inner casing 6. The outer casing 5 is connected to the inner casing 6 through the outer ring 7 and the inner ring 8 by means of hollow blades 9nozzle apparatus (SA) of the turbine 2. The inner part of the outer casing 5 is connected to the wall 10, which is attached to the straightener 11 of the last stage of the compressor 1. The combustion chamber has a rotating nozzle 12, mounted on the shaft 13 of the engine, and a fixed fuel into the internal cavity of the rotating nozzle 12 and is a sleeve that surrounds the shaft 13 and is attached at one end through the wall 15 to the inner casing 6 of the combustion chamber. Fuel to the fixed nozzle 14 is supplied through the pipeline 16 passing through the hollow blade 9CA of the turbine and through housing 3. Between casing 5 and casing 3 there is an annular cavity 17, and between casing 5 and wall 10 – cavity 18. Inner casing 6 is made with a double cylindrical annular partition 19, inside which cavity 20 is formed. Between wall 15 and a cavity 21 is formed by the casing 6. In the outer casing 5 there are holes 22 for the passage of air, in the inner casing 6 there are holes 23. The shape of the casings 5,6 of the flame tube forms combustion zones 1 and II and a mixing zone III in the cavity of the combustion chamber.
During engine operation, compressed air from compressor 1 enters cavity 18 and 17 through straightener 11. Then air enters cavity 20, 21 through hollow blades 9. Cooling blades 9 and walls of inner casing 6, air enters combustion zone I heated due to this by about 100 o C. The number, shape and location of holes 22 and 23 in the walls of the flame tube 5 and 6 provide film cooling of its walls and intensive mixing of air with fuel entering through pipeline 16, fixed nozzle 14 and rotating nozzle 12. Thus, in zone I, the fuel-air mixture is prepared. Due to air heating (due to cooling of the walls of the flame tube and blades 9) entering the combustion zone, the chemical reactions of combustion are accelerated, as a result, carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) have time to burn in the chamber, i.e. the completeness of combustion improves and the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere decreases.
When the engine is started, the fuel is ignited and the initial combustion occurs in zone I, which has a small volume, which, with a low initial fuel consumption, makes it possible to obtain an enriched mixture favorable for ignition. The low consumption of starting fuel allows avoiding overheating (increase) of gas temperature at start-up and, thus, increasing the reliability of the resource engine.
At nominal engine operation, the optimum ratio of fuel and air is obtained in zone II, where complete combustion of the fuel occurs.
When switching to low power mode by reducing fuel consumption and keeping the air flow almost constant, the optimum fuel-air ratio moves to zone I, therefore, stable operation of the combustion chamber is maintained at low power mode in zone 1. Since zones I and II are located closer to the axis of the engine, they have a favorable ratio of area and volume of the flame tube for efficient cooling of the walls.
In zone III, the products of combustion are mixed with the air entering through the openings 22. Zone III is located on the periphery of the combustion chamber and has a much larger volume than zones I and II, and a relatively large length, this factor ensures efficient mixing of combustion products with the air supplied for dilution, i.e. a more uniform temperature field in front of the turbine, which increases the reliability and service life of the turbine and engine combustion chamber.

Description of the invention to the patent
The invention relates to the field of aircraft gas turbine engines (GTE), in particular to the annular combustion chambers of GTE.
An annular combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine of a countercurrent semi-loop type is known, containing a flame tube in the form of an outer and inner casing, between which an annular combustion space is formed, into which compressed air enters from the gas turbine compressor [1]. The outer casing has a cylindrical shell, passing in the front part into a rounded wall near the compressor, and a plurality of fuel injectors are placed in the rear part of the combustion chamber.
The disadvantage of such a combustion chamber is the increased circumferential non-uniformity of the temperature field, which reduces the resource of the combustion chamber and turbine.
An annular combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine, selected as the closest analogue, is known, containing a nozzle rotating on the rotor of the gas turbine engine, supplying fuel to the space of the flame tube between the inner and outer casings. The gas flow in the cavity of the combustion chamber moves first radially, then in the axial direction, while the air from the compressor is supplied to the cavity of the inner casing through the hollow blades of the turbine nozzle apparatus [2].
The disadvantage of the known combustion chamber is the insufficient completeness of fuel combustion and a small range of stable operation of the compressor in off-design modes of operation, increased emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
The objective of the invention is to increase the completeness of fuel combustion and to expand the range of stable operation of the compressor in off-design modes, to reduce the emission of harmful substances.
The problem is solved by the fact that in the annular combustion chamber of the gas turbine engine, containing a body, a flame tube having outer and inner casings with air holes and a partition dividing the volume of the chamber into a central and peripheral part, the partition is made of a double, cylindrical shape, and a rotating nozzle located diametrically opposite the cylindrical partition.
Placement of the injector opposite the annular baffle and the double baffle makes it possible to reduce the emission of harmful substances by improving the mixing of the fuel-air mixture and increasing the combustion efficiency, as well as to increase the reliability and service life of the combustion chamber and turbine by reducing the circumferential unevenness of the temperature field in the chamber.

The new Google Nest Cam is a wired, indoor-only camera with free smart alerts for people, pets, and vehicles.
Indoor cameras are an awkward category. It’s hard to find a way to fit one into your home without feeling like Big Brother is watching you. My family hates having them in the house and only grudgingly lets me set them up to test as long as I take them down as soon as possible. Despite my assurances that the devices are set to not record when we’re home — they just don’t quite believe me. And they’re not alone.
Making a camera prettier so it blends in better with your home — as is the case with Google’s newest $100 Nest Cam (indoor) — may feel like a step in the right direction, but it really isn’t. In the end, it’s still a big black eye staring at you — no matter how attractive its exterior casing.

How we rate and review products
If you’re going to have an indoor camera, you need a really good reason. Security — while a valid reason for some — can be just as easily achieved with a well-placed outdoor camera (and be much less likely to catch you in your knickers by accident). Safety — checking to see if you left the stove on or looking in on the living room when your smart smoke alarm goes off is fine in theory — but, in reality, requires a camera in every nook and cranny where something could conceivably go wrong (which is the theory behind Ring’s new Always Home Cam). Ultimately, the most popular reason to use indoor cameras is to check in on pets and kids.
As a pet / child cam, the Nest Cam — which is part of Google’s new lineup of security cameras that includes a doorbell, an indoor / outdoor camera, and a floodlight cameras — does a nice job. Its best feature is its on-device processing that delivers snappy (and free) smart alerts to tell you whether it’s a cat or your child that just snuck into the kitchen before dinner.
With three hours of free event playback, you can see what went on without having to pay a monthly subscription fee (as long as you catch the alert within that three-hour window), and thanks to some local storage, the camera can record an hour’s worth of events if the internet goes down. If you spring for Google’s Nest Aware plan (starting at $6 a month), you can add the excellent Familiar Faces feature (which will tell you which child snuck into the kitchen — but sadly not which cat) and enable 24/7 recording (a handy feature if you want to see what your dog did all day or “film” a party or event at your home).
Unfortunately, the Nest Cam is not as good at either of these things as Nest’s previous camera — the $299 Nest Cam IQ Indoor. It had the option of sound alerts to detect a dog barking and people talking and could record a timelapse — which was a fun use of 24/7 recording. Granted, it was $200 more expensive and quite large and bulky in comparison to the diminutive newer model, but I’m not usually a fan of making smart home devices dumber or less capable.
Perhaps Google thinks the fancy 4K sensor-powered Nest Cam IQ with a built-in Google Assistant was overkill for the average person, and maybe it was. But that doesn’t explain why the newer Nest Cam with its 1080p, 2-megapixel camera has significantly worse video quality than the older version, beyond just lower resolution. Google said it ditched the 4K sensors to help preserve bandwidth (its wired cameras are notorious data hogs), but based on my testing, competitors’ cameras that cost under $50 have better video quality than this camera. They don’t look as pretty, though.
The Nest Cam struggled with contrast and definition in indoor lighting situations.
The $36 Wyze cam with similar specs as the Nest Cam captured much clearer footage, as you can see in this screenshot taken at the same time in the same location as the Nest Cam.
In my testing, I compared the Nest Cam side-by-side with a $36 Wyze Cam V3, and the Wyze Cam produced much better quality images. The images from the Nest Cam were over-saturated, dark, and regularly had a lot of artefacting. They also looked like I was viewing my home through rose-tinted glasses. I tested two units because Google said it has identified an issue with some cameras where the auto-white balance is out of whack, causing the rosy tint. But both cameras I tested had the same issue. Google says it’s rolling out a fix next month, and I’ll re-test and update this review if I see any changes.
I also did a comparison with the Nest Cam battery, which is Google’s new indoor / outdoor camera that has the option of being wired. It didn’t struggle as much with the contrast as the wired version, but its indoor images were not as crisp and clear as those it captured outdoors.

Night vision on the Nest Cam was more successful — and definitely not rose-tinted. The standard black and white video captures up to 15 feet at night, which is more than you’d need in most home environments. The 6x digital zoom (a step down from the Nest Cam IQ’s 12x) gave me enough pixels to zoom in on faces and make them out clearly.
Of course, video quality isn’t everything when it comes to a smart home security camera. It’s no good having top-quality video if you can’t access it quickly on a useable app. Design and build are also factors, as are privacy features, audio quality, and smart home integrations.
The Nest Cam can be mounted to a ceiling or wall using screws.
The Nest Cam has a nice design and the unique option of four color choices — white, grey, blue, and pink. It’s also surprisingly small — the base is almost as big as the camera, and the two together top out at just under four inches. A maple wood base on the pink camera is a nice decor touch, but I didn’t like the limited amount of flexibility the camera had on the mount (which it’s fixed, too). While you can mount it on the wall, as well as sit flat on a table or shelf, it only tilts up and down a few degrees, making it tricky to position perfectly in some situations. You can move it side to side almost a complete 360 degrees, but the fixed cord will stop you from going all the way around.
When the camera is recording, a small LED on the camera glows green, and this can’t be disabled. If someone is viewing the live stream, the LED flashes. This is a good privacy feature — although not enough to assuage the fears of my family. Ultimately, a physical hardware shutter is the only thing that will make most people feel comfortable, and I’m surprised Google didn’t offer this option.
The Nest Cam is only slightly taller than a travel sized bottle of hand sanitizer.
The Nest Cam has full-duplex two-way audio, which worked well in my testing. I could carry on a conversation as if it were a telephone call — even talking over each other and still being able to hear. That experience is much better than a lot of indoor security cameras where the interaction is more like a walkie-talkie, and lag time can be really frustrating.
The Nest Cam is also fast at sending alerts. Notifications for motion, animals, people, and vehicles (there’s not a lot of traffic in my living room, to be fair) arrived on my iPhone 13 just 1 to 3 seconds after the action. This would give me plenty of time to react — however, the Google Home app takes up to 10 seconds to pull up the footage. For just quickly viewing footage, the Nest Hub smart displays are faster than the app, pulling up a feed within a couple seconds, but you can’t interact with the feed or talk to someone through the Hub.
This brings me to my other issue with the Nest Cam: the Google Home app. You have to use it with this camera; it won’t work with the Nest app. I have used and loved the Nest app for years, and its ability to quickly scroll through footage and recorded events all on one page is something I really miss here. With the Home app, you have to tap into two or three different screens to see clips, live footage, or a timeline, and the timeline scroll is very slow (Google has said it’s fixing this).
While the accuracy of alerts in the newer Nest Cams is far superior to the older ones — which would routinely ping me 35 times in the middle of the night because a spider was building its web on the camera — digging in the Settings section of the Google Home app to figure out how to set up an activity zone is almost as tiresome. But Google has clearly indicated that it plans to migrate everything from the Nest app, so we’ll all have to struggle on in the Home app.
The Nest Cam uses an attached 10 foot USB-A power cable, which can plug into the included power brick.
There is simply too much going on in the Home app to make using it as a security camera hub a pleasant experience. And while the camera interface has some nice touches (like seeing a live feed of all your cameras when you open it), it’s too fiddly and requires too many taps and clicks and scrolls to get to the footage you want.
It’s also missing some features from the Nest app, including scheduling your cameras to come on and off at certain times. Instead, there’s a Routine that will control them based on your location, but that’s not helpful if you want them on at night while you are sleeping. There is an option to only get notified when the camera is on and no one is home, which helps a bit, but scheduling doesn’t feel like a big ask.

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.

You also can’t use Google’s Nest cameras in any ecosystem other than Google Home. The old Nest cameras worked with Amazon Alexa and, more recently, SmartThings, but these are Google only. If you are running a Google smart home, that won’t be an issue — these cameras integrate nicely with any other Google-compatible device. Except for in one odd way — you can’t view your camera feed on a Chromecast-enabled TV. Google says it’s working on adding the feature, as well as a web interface, which was a feature of Nest cameras.
While I do appreciate Google’s efforts to make smart home devices more suited to our home, and the local processing is an excellent step forward, I don’t like seeing devices lose functionality. Google still has a lot of work to do with the Nest Cam, and that’s a shame because Nest’s indoor cameras were the industry gold standard. Now, in far too many respects, they’re playing catch up.

Currently, users can purchase Nest Aware by the amount of cloud storage they’ll receive: 30 days of cloud storage for $6 a month or $60 a year, or 60 days of cloud storage for $12 a month or $120 a year. Users can choose from monthly, flexible contracting that can be cancelled anytime, or annual contracting, which can save users $12 or $24 a year.
Professional monitoring costs either $19 a month if the user wants to sign up for a three-year contract, or $29 a month if the customer wants month-to-month contracting. Like we said, this includes cellular backup.

The cameras both have 1080p HD video, 130-degree fields of view, and the same storage options and smart platform integrations. However, the IQ has twice the amount of LED sensors than the Nest Cam Indoor, making the infrared night vision twice as impressive, plus the ability to zoom in 12 times as opposed to eight. And with a speaker seven times more powerful, the IQ also has improved two-way audio.

The Arlo Pro 2 also has local storage and seven days of free cloud storage, while Nest only gives users three hours for free.

The Arlo Pro 2 is wireless with a battery life of three to six months, while the Nest Cam Indoor only plugs in.

“Over the course of the last 5 days, I’ve called Nest support 3 times by phone and have been on hold for a total of 3 hours and never got through. I contacted them on Twitter but they told me I had to call by phone. Their support department does not have an email address – or if they do, they don’t advertise it…”

You can use a wireless mouse with an iPad that’s running iPadOS 13.4 or later.
To use a mouse on your iPad, you’ll need to pair them using the Bluetooth menu.
Once paired, you can use a mouse with your iPad to navigate, make selections, start apps and more.
Over the past few years, Apple has put more and more effort into marketing the iPad as a replacement for your laptop. One major example of this is how new iPads can connect to a wireless computer mouse, and use it in lieu of the touchscreen.
If you have iPadOS 13.4 or later, you can connect a wireless Bluetooth mouse to your iPad. Connecting a mouse lets you navigate through apps, select items, and click buttons without touching the screen.
Note that some wired computer mice can also connect to an iPad, but you might need a special USB-C adapter for them. Check out the manual for the specific mouse you want to use, or contact the manufacturer for more information.

Which iPads can connect with a mouse?
You can use any wireless Bluetooth mouse with any iPad running iPadOS 13.4 or later. And since the iPad has a Bluetooth receiver built into it, you won’t need a Bluetooth dongle.
These iPad models are compatible with iPadOS 13.4 or later, and can use a mouse:

To make sure you’re running iPadOS 13.4 or later, start the Settings app and tap “General,” then tap “About.” If your iPadOS version is too old, head to the “Software Update” screen and see if a new version is available.
How to connect a wireless mouse to your iPad
1.Turn on your mouse and put it into pairing mode. Generally, there should be a pairing button on the underside of the mouse or in the battery compartment. Press it until you see a blinking light that indicates pairing mode is on.
2. Start the Settings app on your iPad.
3. Tap “Bluetooth.”
4. Look for the mouse in the list of devices. When you see it, tap the name of the mouse.

How to use a mouse with an iPad
Once paired, the mouse should work automatically whenever it’s turned on and in range of the iPad. As you move the mouse, you should see a small dot, which is the mouse pointer.
As it hovers over buttons and icons, you should see them expand or highlight to indicate they’re selected. If you move the pointer into a text field, you should see the I-beam indicating you can type.
The cursor is a gray dot that can be hard to see, but you’ll see items highlight or get larger when the pointer is over them.

This article will guide you through the steps to connect and use a mouse or trackpad with your iPad, which should provide a more confortable user experience.
Using a mouse or trackpad to control your iPad pointer more precisely can be particularly helpful when using creative and productivity apps such as the Microsoft Office, performing image & video editing, creating vector art in illustration apps, and so forth.
The steps here work for all iPad models, including iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini.
Connect a mouse to your iPad

Go to iPad Settings and tap Bluetooth.
Flip the power or pairing switch of your wireless mouse to the ON position.
Within seconds, you should see your mouse name appear below the Under Devices heading. Tap the mouse name to connect it to your iPad.
Finally, move your mouse a bit, and you should see the circular mouse pointer on your iPad screen.

Connect your wired mouse to your iPad directly if it has a USB-C connector at one end, or use an USB-C dongle.

Connect a trackpad to your iPad
Connecting a trackpad to your iPad is the same as a mouse. Here’s how:
Switch on your wireless trackpad. If it has a pairing mode switch, push it to the ON position.
Open the Settings app on your iPad and tap Bluetooth.
You should see your trackpad appear under the Other Devices heading. Tap its name to connect it to your iPad.
Once the trackpad is connected, you can start using it instantly.
Use a mouse or trackpad on iPad
iPadOS doesn’t discriminate depending on which mouse or trackpad you’re using. But if you use a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, you obviously benefit from the awesome gestures they support.
Irrespective of whether it’s a wired or wireless mouse or trackpad, you can perform the following actions:
Go home: Click the Home bar at the bottom of the screen.
Open Control Center: Take the pointer over the battery icon in the top right and click.
Open Notification Center: Take the pointer to the time indicator in the top left and click.
Scroll: Use the standard gesture supported by your mouse or trackpad.
App Switcher: Bring the mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen and continue to drag it down until you see the App Switcher with all open app tiles.

Customize your mouse and trackpad experience
Open iPad Settings and tap Accessibility.
Tap Pointer Control.
From here, you can tweak the following settings:
Increase Contrast: This will make the circular pointer a bit darker.
Automatically Hide Pointer: After a while of inactivity, the circular pointer disappears from the screen. Turning it off will always show the pointer.
Color: Use this to add a white, blue, red, green, yellow, or orange border to the gray pointer. You can also adjust the border width.
Pointer Size: Lets you increase the size of the circular gray mouse and trackpad pointer.
Pointer Animations: If you turn it off, you may notice fewer pointer animations. For example, with this enabled, when you take the mouse pointer to an app icon on the Home Screen, the pointer hides from view. But with pointer animations off, it will show the pointer over the app icon.
Scrolling Speed: Using this slider, you can increase or decrease the scrolling speed of the mouse or trackpad.
Double-Tap to Drag and Trackpad Inertia: You will see these options only when you connect a trackpad to your iPad. The former lets you customize your dragging experience. Trackpad Inertia ensures the pointer continues to move a bit and slows down smoothly after you have flicked your finger. If it’s off, the pointer comes to a quick halt.
Mouse settings with AssistiveTouch: Tap AssistiveTouch settings from the bottom > select your connected mouse. From here, you can customize your mouse buttons to work with AssistiveTouch. You can configure your mouse buttons to perform specific actions.
Check the battery of your mouse or trackpad

Disconnect the mouse and trackpad
Wired
If it’s a wired mouse or trackpad, simply unplug it from iPad’s USB-C port or USB-C hub, and it will disconnect it.
Wireless
Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
Tap the info button ⓘ next to the connected mouse or trackpad.
From here, tap Disconnect.
Note: Many modern mice support simultaneous connection with two or more devices. However, if you have a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad or a similar wireless mouse, you will have to tap Forget This Device and then switch off and switch on the mouse/trackpad to make it available to connect with other devices like your Mac.

Although the use is ultimately different and we also get other features thanks to the touch screen or other accessories like the iOS Pencil, the truth is that they are still almost indispensable for many users. And if you didn’t know about this feature, you can discover it now as we will tell you how to connect any mouse to iPad and the requirements for it.

Unfortunately, not all versions of iOS/iPadOS support this feature, and not all devices. This feature was added in iPadOS 13.4 so it is present in those versions later. This is probably the easiest way to connect a mouse to your iPad. It’s true that it’s strange to continue using wired mice at this point, but they’re still on the market, and even if you have one at home, it can be very useful for tablet work. Even though there are already very low latency wireless devices, in the end, wired devices are still one of the best times, so this can be an important advantage. In any case, the connection method is very simple as you only need plug it into Lightning or USB-C of your iPad for which you may need USB adapter for these connections. Here below we leave you with the two most recommended for these cases.
There are also some wireless mice that don’t go via Bluetooth but work via a nano receiver that needs to be connected to the iPad. For this, the process is identical to wired, since this receiver will also require an adapter. Once the mouse is connected and turned on, it can be used normally.
Connect a Bluetooth mouse to iPad
When connecting a mouse via bluetooth, we did not find any difficulties, because it is connected in the same way as any other accessory that works with this type of technology. First of all, you must make sure that the mouse has batteries or batteries, that it is turned on, and that if it has a Bluetooth connection button, it will activate. After confirming this, follow these steps:

A microwave drawer is the modern choice, bringing form and function to your kitchen. There are a variety of makes, models, styles, and finishes to choose from.

There are three main types of microwaves: countertop, over-oven (aka built-in), and under-counter (aka microwave drawer). Here’s a bit more about each one.
Countertop Microwaves – The first models to hit the market, countertop microwaves get the job done and they’re usually the most inexpensive. However, they take up valuable real estate in the kitchen. Countertop space is at a premium, whether it’s a workspace or just to keep it visually open. Find my favorite tips for how to eliminate kitchen counter clutter here.
Over the Oven Microwaves – Over the range microwaves are typically mounted to the wall and installed between two cabinets. Generally speaking, you purchase a size that is as close as possible to the space you have to fill, and it comes with filler pieces to make up the difference. This type of microwave requires some type of ventilation system.
Microwave Drawers – If you want the microwave in island look, you’ll need to purchase a microwave drawer. A drawer microwave fits under the counter in a lower cabinet. They allow countertops to stay uncluttered, while also creating a more seamless aesthetic overall.
Where to Install Under Counter Microwave
Microwave drawers are especially popular in kitchen islands, because it’s such a central, convenient location for use. However, they can be installed under any countertop or in any wall cabinet. They can go against a corner or next to a wall – basically anywhere a wall oven can be installed.
Some homeowners like to stack their microwave drawer just under a wall oven, so all of their cooking appliances are together in one place. There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it.
One other thing to consider is that microwave drawers can be installed flush with the cabinet face for a more seamless look or installed proud, which means protruding slightly in front of the cabinets. How you choose to do it depends on your personal preference.
How Does an Under Counter Microwave Work?
Microwave drawers are extremely user friendly. When you’re ready to use it, simply open it with the touch of a button. The drawer will slide out, rather than swing on a hinge like traditional microwaves.
Lower your food inside the tray, then select your desired settings on the control panel. Close the drawer with another touch of a button. That’s it! Keep reading for some of the pros and cons.

Regardless of the brand, there are currently two sizes available for the exterior of the drawer, but the interior size is the same.
Outside width: 24″ or 30″ (24″ is the most popular size)
Interior measurements (same for 24″ and 30″ models): 17 5/16” W x 7 1/8” H x 16 9/16” D (1.2 cu. ft)
Microwave in Island Pros and Cons
Personally, I don’t think there is much to not love about having a drawer-style microwave. But I’ll let you decide for yourselves. Here’s a list of some of the pros and cons of under counter microwaves:
Pros of Microwave Drawers
Additional countertop space – Like an over the oven microwave, a microwave drawer leaves your countertops clear for workspace, decor items, or just to be visually open.
Space for an oven hood – Custom oven hoods are trending right now, and you can’t exactly have one with a microwave over your oven. A microwave drawer allows you to install an oven hood that can be a statement piece in your kitchen.
Improved accessibility – These open out instead of swinging on a hinge. This is good news for anyone who is left-handed or who may have trouble lifting heavy dishes above chest height. With a lower microwave, they can easily lower dishes in and lift them out.
Easy to clean – Not only are these microwaves easier to reach, but without a turntable they don’t have any nooks and crannies. They have only easy-to-clean flat surfaces.
Design is modern – Most models have a sleek design that fits well into a modern aesthetic. However, it looks right at home in a more classic style like mine, because it makes the space look updated and fresh. Safety features – Some parents are concerned about having a microwave that is low enough for their children to reach. There’s no need to worry! Under counter microwaves have a feature that allows adults to lock the control panel. It can be set as the default, so you can rest assured your children can’t use it without you present.
Large capacity – You don’t have to compromise on space. The interior can fit a 4-qt casserole dish, which I find is plenty of space.
Cook as you go – You can easily add seasoning or stir without removing your food from the microwave. Just open the drawer, stir your food, and close again. It’s that simple!
Cons of Microwave Drawers
No convection – Convection cooking occurs through circulating hot air throughout the appliance. Currently, this can’t be done in any microwave drawer due to lack of ventilation. This means no broiling or baking like you can in a regular oven.
No turntable – Microwave drawers have newer technology that doesn’t use turntables to heat food. That’s only a con if you’re really set on the old way of doing things.
Same heating capabilities as other microwaves – They do a good job, but they aren’t going to work miracles on frozen food.
Limited sizes – Only 24″ and 30″ widths are currently available, and the interior sizes are all the same across brands.
Installation – Installing a microwave in your island is a bit more complicated than plugging one into your wall. If you’re not really familiar with what you’re doing, I recommend hiring a professional electrician to do the job.
Cost – Traditional microwaves cost between $100 – $500. You will pay more to get the premium design and features of a microwave drawer in your island. An under counter microwave drawer typically costs about $1,000 but can cost up to $1,800, not including installation.

Why Are Microwave Drawers Expensive?
There’s no way around it. If you want the microwave drawer look and function, you’re going to pay more for it.
The main reason is because the technology belongs to SHARP, which means they make all of the microwave drawers and can charge as much as they want for them. Also, these are the only microwaves that don’t rely on turntables to heat food, so the parts are unique. Unique equals more expensive. And finally, the parts are high-quality and up-to-date, which means they will cost more.
Other companies, like Bosch, GE, and KitchenAid, buy the base microwave from SHARP at a high price, then add extra parts to it to make it their own. Technically, they could add cheap parts to try to save a few dollars, but what’s the point? If they’re already spending $900 on a base microwave, it makes sense to add high-quality parts.
This is why microwave drawers are at their current pricepoint, and it’s why they aren’t likely to drop any time soon.
Is a Under Counter Microwave Worth It?
The answer to this question is entirely up to you. I obviously decided that for me, the answer was yes!

If cost is your only consideration, there are definitely more affordable options in microwaves. However, if you’re considering the form, function, and premium features of a microwave drawer, the higher cost may be worth it to you. Only you can decide that.
For some people, other factors are more important than the cost. Maybe they love the sleek, uncluttered look of having a microwave in their island. Or perhaps they have a condition, such as arthritis, that makes it difficult to lift dishes into an over-oven microwave. Improved accessibility is a big reason many people choose to go with under counter microwaves.
One thing to consider is that sometimes brands will run deals that offer free microwave drawers when you purchase their appliance package. That could be a big savings if you’re in the market for new appliances.
Think of what is important to you, then decide if the extra cost is worth it to you. If your answer is yes, maybe it would mean a few extra months of saving. That’s worth it for years of enjoying what you want, right?

Width of built-in microwave ovens
The minimum width is 48 cm. Narrow models are very rare.

Embedding parameters: niche and cabinet dimensions
You can place the microwave at any height, but the optimal position is not lower than the level of the countertop (82-85 cm) and not higher than eye level – this parameter is selected individually, taking into account the height of the user.
If the oven, especially the multifunctional one, is located at the level of the face, it should be opened carefully to avoid burns from hot steam. It is recommended to avoid the proximity of the microwave oven to the sink and hob, as well as to the heating radiator.
Each product presented in the store is accompanied by instructions and an embedding diagram with dimensions, and for most models, dimensions are given for embedding both in a cabinet and in a niche.

Getting started with the app:
1. Login with your Ooma phone number and password. Please note that the app works with the primary number on your Ooma account, not additional numbers. If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it by visiting My Ooma.
2. Make unlimited domestic calls without using your cellular plan minutes. The Ooma application makes calls using the Internet, also known as Voice Over IP (VoIP). Make sure that you have a strong Internet connection, either Wi-Fi or 3G/4G, to ensure the highest voice quality.
3. Make international calls for low rates. Visit My Ooma to purchase international calling credits or to sign up for the Ooma World calling plan which includes unlimited calls to more than 60 countries.

Recent Update Falls Short
I’ve been waiting for Ooma to add the ability to blacklist numbers from the app since I started using it and am very happy that the function is finally here. But what makes me rate this ones start short of great, is the fact that once you add number to the blacklist, there’s no way to remember — say days or a week later — if you blacklisted that number. Where as on the website when you blacklist a number there is a visual cue (a red circle with a line through it) that let’s you know that you have successfully added that number to the blacklist.
Currently, when you go back to look at at number you may have blacklisted the day before, it still says “Add to Blacklist” as if you never took any action on that number. And if you tap that link, it takes you through the process as if you didn’t blacklist it. That made me have go to the website just to double check that it the blacklist was actually applied — which renders the efficiency and convenience of the new feature moot. It can be something like turning the “Add to Blacklist” red or replacing that with the red circle with the line through it (like on the website) to let you know that you were sucessful in blacklisting a number.

after years of having Ooma as my main phone line, I love that now I can finally get calls on my cell phone. I live in Australia but have a US phone number and it makes it so easy for me to contact friends and family overseas for very little cost. I appreciate not having to be home to call the states. It has really added a new element to the convenience to it. The app probably isn’t very helpful if you don’t have a paid in my account however, in my case I do.
I am having 2 issues though, I live in Australia but I have a US phone number through Ooma and even though I put my phone on do not disturb when I go to sleep at night the Ooma calls still come through loud and clear waking me up at night, need to figure out a way to change those settings.
The other thing that is problematic, when I’m on my cell phone app and I arrive home, call disconnects. So that’s a bit of a bummer sometimes, but overall I love that I can call with Emma from my cell phone now! especially for our situation. For most people though I don’t know how useful it would be.
Over 10 years
I have been a customer for over 10 years and now I am having thoughts of dropping my service. The app has fallen short of being useful anymore. It errors constantly, doesn’t forward many calls and if you decide to reinstall it forces you to sign up for their premier service without any ability to bypass and just log into your account. Customer service has been useless and they send me to their technical service, but you cannot understand them and all they want you to do is reinstall again. I believe that the forcing you to sign up for the premier service each time you install is a violation of some type of law and I plan on writing letters to several organizations so that future customers are not dinged with their horrible tactics. The app has not even been updated decently for a long time. They just fixed it enough to work on the current iOS, but no fixing the large bugs that are in the app. Being a VOIP they could offer texting, but they refuse to add it in. So even though it has saved me lots of money over a standard phone line, I am going to use other portable numbers more often and maybe just quit using this service.

The new Google Nest Cam is a wired, indoor-only camera with free smart alerts for people, pets, and vehicles.
Indoor cameras are an awkward category. It’s hard to find a way to fit one into your home without feeling like Big Brother is watching you. My family hates having them in the house and only grudgingly lets me set them up to test as long as I take them down as soon as possible. Despite my assurances that the devices are set to not record when we’re home — they just don’t quite believe me. And they’re not alone.
Making a camera prettier so it blends in better with your home — as is the case with Google’s newest $100 Nest Cam (indoor) — may feel like a step in the right direction, but it really isn’t. In the end, it’s still a big black eye staring at you — no matter how attractive its exterior casing.

Security — while a valid reason for some — can be just as easily achieved with a well-placed outdoor camera (and be much less likely to catch you in your knickers by accident). Safety — checking to see if you left the stove on or looking in on the living room when your smart smoke alarm goes off is fine in theory — but, in reality, requires a camera in every nook and cranny where something could conceivably go wrong (which is the theory behind Ring’s new Always Home Cam). Ultimately, the most popular reason to use indoor cameras is to check in on pets and kids.
As a pet / child cam, the Nest Cam — which is part of Google’s new lineup of security cameras that includes a doorbell, an indoor / outdoor camera, and a floodlight cameras — does a nice job. Its best feature is its on-device processing that delivers snappy (and free) smart alerts to tell you whether it’s a cat or your child that just snuck into the kitchen before dinner.
With three hours of free event playback, you can see what went on without having to pay a monthly subscription fee (as long as you catch the alert within that three-hour window), and thanks to some local storage, the camera can record an hour’s worth of events if the internet goes down. If you spring for Google’s Nest Aware plan (starting at $6 a month), you can add the excellent Familiar Faces feature (which will tell you which child snuck into the kitchen — but sadly not which cat) and enable 24/7 recording (a handy feature if you want to see what your dog did all day or “film” a party or event at your home).
Unfortunately, the Nest Cam is not as good at either of these things as Nest’s previous camera — the $299 Nest Cam IQ Indoor. It had the option of sound alerts to detect a dog barking and people talking and could record a timelapse — which was a fun use of 24/7 recording. Granted, it was $200 more expensive and quite large and bulky in comparison to the diminutive newer model, but I’m not usually a fan of making smart home devices dumber or less capable.
Perhaps Google thinks the fancy 4K sensor-powered Nest Cam IQ with a built-in Google Assistant was overkill for the average person, and maybe it was. But that doesn’t explain why the newer Nest Cam with its 1080p, 2-megapixel camera has significantly worse video quality than the older version, beyond just lower resolution. Google said it ditched the 4K sensors to help preserve bandwidth (its wired cameras are notorious data hogs), but based on my testing, competitors’ cameras that cost under $50 have better video quality than this camera. They don’t look as pretty, though.
The Nest Cam struggled with contrast and definition in indoor lighting situations.
The $36 Wyze cam with similar specs as the Nest Cam captured much clearer footage, as you can see in this screenshot taken at the same time in the same location as the Nest Cam.
In my testing, I compared the Nest Cam side-by-side with a $36 Wyze Cam V3, and the Wyze Cam produced much better quality images. The images from the Nest Cam were over-saturated, dark, and regularly had a lot of artefacting. They also looked like I was viewing my home through rose-tinted glasses. I tested two units because Google said it has identified an issue with some cameras where the auto-white balance is out of whack, causing the rosy tint. But both cameras I tested had the same issue. Google says it’s rolling out a fix next month, and I’ll re-test and update this review if I see any changes.
I also did a comparison with the Nest Cam battery, which is Google’s new indoor / outdoor camera that has the option of being wired. It didn’t struggle as much with the contrast as the wired version, but its indoor images were not as crisp and clear as those it captured outdoors.

Night vision on the Nest Cam was more successful — and definitely not rose-tinted. The standard black and white video captures up to 15 feet at night, which is more than you’d need in most home environments. The 6x digital zoom (a step down from the Nest Cam IQ’s 12x) gave me enough pixels to zoom in on faces and make them out clearly.
Of course, video quality isn’t everything when it comes to a smart home security camera. It’s no good having top-quality video if you can’t access it quickly on a useable app. Design and build are also factors, as are privacy features, audio quality, and smart home integrations.
The Nest Cam can be mounted to a ceiling or wall using screws.
The Nest Cam has a nice design and the unique option of four color choices — white, grey, blue, and pink. It’s also surprisingly small — the base is almost as big as the camera, and the two together top out at just under four inches. A maple wood base on the pink camera is a nice decor touch, but I didn’t like the limited amount of flexibility the camera had on the mount (which it’s fixed, too). While you can mount it on the wall, as well as sit flat on a table or shelf, it only tilts up and down a few degrees, making it tricky to position perfectly in some situations. You can move it side to side almost a complete 360 degrees, but the fixed cord will stop you from going all the way around.
When the camera is recording, a small LED on the camera glows green, and this can’t be disabled. If someone is viewing the live stream, the LED flashes. This is a good privacy feature — although not enough to assuage the fears of my family. Ultimately, a physical hardware shutter is the only thing that will make most people feel comfortable, and I’m surprised Google didn’t offer this option.
The Nest Cam is only slightly taller than a travel sized bottle of hand sanitizer.
The Nest Cam has full-duplex two-way audio, which worked well in my testing. I could carry on a conversation as if it were a telephone call — even talking over each other and still being able to hear. That experience is much better than a lot of indoor security cameras where the interaction is more like a walkie-talkie, and lag time can be really frustrating.
The Nest Cam is also fast at sending alerts. Notifications for motion, animals, people, and vehicles (there’s not a lot of traffic in my living room, to be fair) arrived on my iPhone 13 just 1 to 3 seconds after the action. This would give me plenty of time to react — however, the Google Home app takes up to 10 seconds to pull up the footage. For just quickly viewing footage, the Nest Hub smart displays are faster than the app, pulling up a feed within a couple seconds, but you can’t interact with the feed or talk to someone through the Hub.
This brings me to my other issue with the Nest Cam: the Google Home app. You have to use it with this camera; it won’t work with the Nest app. I have used and loved the Nest app for years, and its ability to quickly scroll through footage and recorded events all on one page is something I really miss here. With the Home app, you have to tap into two or three different screens to see clips, live footage, or a timeline, and the timeline scroll is very slow (Google has said it’s fixing this).
While the accuracy of alerts in the newer Nest Cams is far superior to the older ones — which would routinely ping me 35 times in the middle of the night because a spider was building its web on the camera — digging in the Settings section of the Google Home app to figure out how to set up an activity zone is almost as tiresome. But Google has clearly indicated that it plans to migrate everything from the Nest app, so we’ll all have to struggle on in the Home app.
The Nest Cam uses an attached 10 foot USB-A power cable, which can plug into the included power brick.
There is simply too much going on in the Home app to make using it as a security camera hub a pleasant experience. And while the camera interface has some nice touches (like seeing a live feed of all your cameras when you open it), it’s too fiddly and requires too many taps and clicks and scrolls to get to the footage you want.
It’s also missing some features from the Nest app, including scheduling your cameras to come on and off at certain times. Instead, there’s a Routine that will control them based on your location, but that’s not helpful if you want them on at night while you are sleeping. There is an option to only get notified when the camera is on and no one is home, which helps a bit, but scheduling doesn’t feel like a big ask.

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.

You also can’t use Google’s Nest cameras in any ecosystem other than Google Home. The old Nest cameras worked with Amazon Alexa and, more recently, SmartThings, but these are Google only. If you are running a Google smart home, that won’t be an issue — these cameras integrate nicely with any other Google-compatible device. Except for in one odd way — you can’t view your camera feed on a Chromecast-enabled TV. Google says it’s working on adding the feature, as well as a web interface, which was a feature of Nest cameras.
While I do appreciate Google’s efforts to make smart home devices more suited to our home, and the local processing is an excellent step forward, I don’t like seeing devices lose functionality. Google still has a lot of work to do with the Nest Cam, and that’s a shame because Nest’s indoor cameras were the industry gold standard. Now, in far too many respects, they’re playing catch up.

Person detection means that the camera doesn’t just alert users of any motion that their Nest Cam Indoors capture. Rather, they’ll only be notified if the Nest Cam Indoor detects a person, making for notifications that matter more.
Nest Aware takes it a step further with familiar face alerts. Over time, the camera will begin to recognize certain faces, which the user can name in the Nest app. Users can also receive dog-barking alerts and person speaking alerts, making for a smart camera that’s truly intelligent.

Currently, users can purchase Nest Aware by the amount of cloud storage they’ll receive: 30 days of cloud storage for $6 a month or $60 a year, or 60 days of cloud storage for $12 a month or $120 a year. Users can choose from monthly, flexible contracting that can be cancelled anytime, or annual contracting, which can save users $12 or $24 a year.
Professional monitoring costs either $19 a month if the user wants to sign up for a three-year contract, or $29 a month if the customer wants month-to-month contracting. Like we said, this includes cellular backup.

Nest Cam Indoor vs. Nest Cam IQ Indoor
The Nest Cam IQ Indoor is basically a more advanced version of the Nest Cam Indoor, costing $299 in comparison to $199. The cameras both have 1080p HD video, 130-degree fields of view, and the same storage options and smart platform integrations. However, the IQ has twice the amount of LED sensors than the Nest Cam Indoor, making the infrared night vision twice as impressive, plus the ability to zoom in 12 times as opposed to eight. And with a speaker seven times more powerful, the IQ also has improved two-way audio.

But in terms of features, it’s pretty similar to the Nest Cam Indoor, with the exact same video, audio, night vision, storage options, smart platform integrations and AI. Unlike the Nest Cam Indoor, the Arlo Pro 2 can be used outside in temperatures from negative four to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It also works with Alexa and Google Assistant in addition to IFTTT, Stringify and Apple HomeKit. The Arlo Pro 2 also has local storage and seven days of free cloud storage, while Nest only gives users three hours for free.

Both cameras have 1080p HD video, eight times zoom, 130-degree fields of view, and infrared night vision, although we weren’t super impressed with the Arlo Pro 2’s night vision, two-way audio, and person detection available for an extra cost. The Arlo Pro 2 is wireless with a battery life of three to six months, while the Nest Cam Indoor only plugs in.

Our Experience Contacting Support
When we couldn’t find our answers on Nest’s online support center, we were forced to use either live chat or the phone line. Unfortunately, the phone support was pretty poor. Our representative didn’t seem to be very knowledgeable about the Nest products in general and knew about as much as was on the website, defeating the purpose of the phone line itself.
Amazon Ratings
The Nest Cam Indoor currently has a 4.1 out of five star rating on Amazon, which is really good. However, when we searched “customer support,” we found that the majority of the reviews were one star. One user complained of the phone line specifically,
“Over the course of the last 5 days, I’ve called Nest support 3 times by phone and have been on hold for a total of 3 hours and never got through. I contacted them on Twitter but they told me I had to call by phone. Their support department does not have an email address – or if they do, they don’t advertise it…”
Unfortunately, this matched our experience with Nest’s phone line, which should only be used as a last resort after the online options.

Security — while a valid reason for some — can be just as easily achieved with a well-placed outdoor camera (and be much less likely to catch you in your knickers by accident). Safety — checking to see if you left the stove on or looking in on the living room when your smart smoke alarm goes off is fine in theory — but, in reality, requires a camera in every nook and cranny where something could conceivably go wrong (which is the theory behind Ring’s new Always Home Cam). Ultimately, the most popular reason to use indoor cameras is to check in on pets and kids. 
If you spring for Google’s Nest Aware plan (starting at $6 a month), you can add the excellent Familiar Faces feature (which will tell you which child snuck into the kitchen — but sadly not which cat) and enable 24/7 recording (a handy feature if you want to see what your dog did all day or “film” a party or event at your home).
Google said it ditched the 4K sensors to help preserve bandwidth (its wired cameras are notorious data hogs), but based on my testing, competitors’ cameras that cost under $50 have better video quality than this camera. They don’t look as pretty, though.
But both cameras I tested had the same issue. Google says it’s rolling out a fix next month, and I’ll re-test and update this review if I see any changes.
This would give me plenty of time to react — however, the Google Home app takes up to 10 seconds to pull up the footage. For just quickly viewing footage, the Nest Hub smart displays are faster than the app, pulling up a feed within a couple seconds, but you can’t interact with the feed or talk to someone through the Hub. 
But Google has clearly indicated that it plans to migrate everything from the Nest app, so we’ll all have to struggle on in the Home app. 
But it also works with Alexa as well as smart light bulbs from Philips Hue, allowing for automated actions like having the living room lights turn off when the Nest Cam Indoor is armed. Let’s see exactly how users can control the Nest Cam Indoor with their voices alone.
Person detection means that the camera doesn’t just alert users of any motion that their Nest Cam Indoors capture. Rather, they’ll only be notified if the Nest Cam Indoor detects a person, making for notifications that matter more.
And with a speaker seven times more powerful, the IQ also has improved two-way audio.

The iPad mouse looks weird – and the somewhat bulky design means it’s not very portable – but people love the feel of it. This Bluetooth mouse is also equipped with Logitech Flow technology, which allows you to connect up to three devices at the same time and use the cursor seamlessly on all three screens.
